Set List critique

I would love to hear Appreciate, I Can Bet, Calico Skies, Little Willow, and even older stuff like Take It Away or With A Little Luck. Wouldn’t it be nice if just once he read this thread and took it to heart? If I knew for certain he really was going to “Freshen Up” his setlist, I would definitely do my damndest to get a ticket to one of his concerts if he comes to the U.S. But being the pessimist I am, I don’t really think that’s going to happen.

After some quick reviewing, it would seem that the current setlist only contains three songs that have never been played by Paul live during his solo career in London and/or Liverpool...those three being "A Hard Days Night" "You Won't See Me" and "Love Me Do". We know how the British press already treats Paul, so one would think he would want to be ahead of the game in terms of being considered stale and add another 10-12 songs to this category for the sake of these two shows if nothing else, and include them in the entirety of the tour to truly live up to the namesake and "Freshen Up".
On the otherhand, Glasgow and several of the Canadian cities would already get about a dozen new songs if absolutely nothing changed. I guess it's most likely that he will "split the difference" as it were.
...and to be clear, I'm talking ticketed shows announced in advance...no pop-up deals.

I think I would faint if I read he did any of those songs - lol.

We all know he will think adding 3-4 songs from the new album will be good enough to consider it being "freshened up". Like I said in another post, he might change the opener to a different Beatle tune and if he changes anything more than that I will honestly be surprised. I would love for him to surprise me - lol

Great post Nancy and they are all terrific songs I would like to hear. May I throw in others like Alligator, the whole Memory Almost Full medley - Vintage Clothes, That Was Me and Feet in the Clouds, Promise to You Girl, Too Much Rain etc etc. Just a half dozesn of songs like these and it would truly be a "Freshen Up" tour.
After seeing the entire Liverpool Setlist however, I'm equally pessimistic.

Yes, it is going to be the same old thing. If in "secret" shows he can't let loose and try some different solo songs it just is not going to happen. The songs above would be wonderful to hear live but once they were recorded it is like they never existed. It really amazes me how a bunch of people here still get so excited over hearing him do these Beatle songs time after time. It is one thing to play them at home over and over, it is another thing to spend hundreds of dollars on it time after time IMO. Oh well, it is not my time or money so if that is what makes some people happy so be it. I know I have said it fairly often but I will be looking forward to hearing Egypt Station a lot more than hearing about another tour.

Agree 100% Yankeefan. Where is the Paul of 1976 (Wings Over America) or 1989 (Flowers in the Dirt Tour where he opened the shows with "Figure of 8". He's just given into the prevailing thought of many critics that Paul's Post Beatles' career was just "hit and miss" at best and not in the same universe as his Beatle songs. If I were in his shoes and continued to hear comments like that, I would be more determined than ever to play at last a decent proportion of the setlist to songs from 1977 to 2013. No reason that he doesn't have a dozen songs included from those era's. There's still plenty of space for his Beatle signature songs.

I wanna make a game, if John had a gig at Cavern at the age of 76, which songs would he play? Here my list:
The only rules was: If Paul played Magical mystery tour I have choose a Lennon song from the same album, if Paul have play a solo years song, I have choose a solo year Lennon song and so..
In brackets the song played by Paul.1. Twist and Shout (Twenty flight rock)
2. I am the walrus (Magical mystery tour)
3. I found out (Jet)
4. It won't be long (All my loving)
5. I don't wanna be a soldier (Letting go)
6. Well well well (Come on to me)
7. Meat city (Let me roll it)
8. Dig a pony (I've got a feeling)
9. Mind games (My Valentine)
10. Instant Karma (1985)
11. Hey Bulldog (Lady Madonna)
12. Hello little girl (In spite of all the danger)
13. When I get home (Thing we said today)
14. What you got (Confidante)
15. There's a place (Love me do)
16. I'm losing you (Who cares)
17. Yer blues (Birthday)
18. Not a second time (I wanna be your man)
19. I'm steppin' out (Fuh you)
20. One after 909 (Get back)
21. Everybody's got something to hide..(Obladi oblada)
22. It's so hard (Band on the run)
23.Scared (Hi hi hi)

In our imaginary alternate universe, JOHN! I am a dyed-in-the-wool Paul fan, but I have seen him live enough times. I would go again if he he comes to Atlanta, just to hear songs from Egypt Station. (And if by some miracle he throws in a song he’s never done live before)

Paul's shows ( set-lists) I think are really aimed at the people who are attending for the very first time. And they basically want a 'greatest hits' show. Only a small minority of the audience will bother buying the new album (or will have bought his recent albums), with the vast majority being there simply to gawp at a 'living Beatle' before he turns his toes up. Paul willl always sell out shows but sadly that won't translate into 'album sales'. See Egypt Station rocket straight in near to the top of the charts before falling out of the charts within a couple of months.
At least Paul does adjust the set-list a bit from tour to tour which is better than nothing. There's little point Paul performing (for example) I Can Bet or Feet in the Clouds when most of the folk facing him will never have heard of them.
-
Maybe he didn't shake up the set list for the secret Liddypool show 'cause he's saving it for the tour...hope that's it !
"Little point" in performing songs like "I Can Bet" and "Alligator" and such--there's a point--it would liven and invigorate not just "freshen up" the show, would be electrifying if he chooses the right songs that play well in a huge venue before many thousands. He'd seem like a still highly productive viable innovative songwriter, which is what he is, with his ongoing penchant for such astounding variety in styles and genres, his sparkling diversity. Showcase that. He could fire off the new offerings interspersing them at an exhilarating fast pace, dazzling the audience and the so called "real fans." Everybody. I don't think most people are so narrow minded and stodgy stick in the muds that they only want to hear the usual big hits and "classics," I give people more credit than that.
-
My set list expectations are so low at this point, I'll be ecstatic if all he does is get rid of Four Five Seconds and I Wanna be your Man.

I believe you are right. After all, it wouldn't make sense for him to reveal now all the "new" Beatles/Wings songs that have been set aside for the upcoming tour. Except for "From Me To You", which he did at LIPA as a teaser of things to come.
The purpose of these mini-shows is to draw publicity towards the new album, and there's a lot of talk about the 4 songs from it that he's performing live at those shows. If he also played those "new" Beatles/Wings songs, it's likely they would become the center of attention instead.

I came across this article about artists who detest singing/playing a signature song and thought the comments about Frank Sinatra where interesting. I wonder if Paul has a similar reaction to some of his songs and maybe that is the reason he doesn't play them live although Ol' Blue Eyes seemed to grudgingly give in to his fans.

I really don't think he detest doing any signature song because he never seems to mind playing them over and over again every tour. I think he "detests" (lol) playing his solo songs when it is not on his latest album.

I have been fortunate to see Paul 8 times and each show has been slightly different, with the main core songs always played. Looking ahead to the freshen up tour i expect the main stayers will remain plus we'll get the 'Egypt Station' tracks. I would be happy if Paul included the following;
Getting Better, Good Day Sunshine, Penny Lane, anything from Flaming Pie album, Let em in, Take it away and he may sing 'Michelle' in Paris!

He used to sing "Flaming Pie" and "Calico Skies" frequently in concert, some years ago. Not all that long ago? I agree, I would love it if he does "Getting Better," "Penny Lane," and/or "Take It Away" and I'm sure he'll sing "Michelle" in Paris. I heard him sing "Good Day Sunshine" in Charlotte in 2010 and it sounded fabulous. Ditto "Let 'em In," fantastic ! That was a trip he did a couple from "Memory Almost Full" in Paris once. "My Ever Present Past" and perhaps another.
This new tour is called "The Freshen Up Tour"--is he indirectly saying "Fuh You" to all the critics including fans who keep calling him out for not including new songs or different songs often enough in his shows? That means, if so, he gets miffed about it, especially if he doesn't change things around quite a bit and add new ones and different ones much more this go round, as you'd think he will, considering the tour's title.
-
It seemed special to me I got to hear him sing "My Love" live. (smiley face) I had the impression he's done that one live relatively rarely, in more recent times?

I bet they sounded ace to hear, with where we are with Pauls shows im happy to hear anything new whether they have featured in a previous tour . You could interpret Freshen up a number of different ways, guess we'll find out later this month
