Set List critique

As suspected, the set list moaners are back - did you really think he was going to radically change the set list?
Why can't people just be glad that he's still touring at all?
Real simple. People like me moan because he has critically acclaimed album that is #1 in the US and he plays just three songs from it. Do you think that his audience would have cared if he did not play "45 seconds" and "In Spite Of All Danger" and replaced it with two really good songs from "Egypt Station". Isn't part of the reason you go on tour is to promote your new album and play a bunch of it.

First of all, it's not a freshed up set list.
Second of all, the set list is great.
Third, it's bacially a One On One show.
I would personally like to have 4/5 Seconds dropped. It would have been cool to do once or for 6 months. So many better songs Paul actually wrote.
It's kinda cool and surprising Queenie Eye is still in the set list. A song from an album that isn't his most current, plus it rocks live and is trippy as hell.
Was "My Valentine" the version from the Grand Central Station show? If so, that's cool.
Was "Letting Go" the same as the Grand Central Station show with the horn part at the end? if so, that's cool.
In Spite Of All The Danger should go out. Replace it with When I'm 64. He played a bit of it on Carpool Kareoke.
Glad Mr. Kite stayed in.
A Hard Days Night was great. Would love to see Help! as an opener.
I've always thought Young Boy would be a great second song.
Should have called it, "Ain't Broke, Not Fixing It" tour. Freshen Up it is not.
I'll still go and trip mad balls. It's PAUL!!!

IMO the majority is glad that he's still on tour! BUT this is the first tour he opens again with the same opener he did the tour before. He named it "freshen up" released recently a very sucessful new album but performed only 3 songs from it. I could expand with lot's other argument (already written here from other fans) . The Point is it wasn't nessesary to rename to freshen up tour. For me it's nothing else than a simple marketing trick. Setlist changes for US Tour 2005, Up and coming Tour 2010 or Out There 2013 were steps in the right direction. This setlist is a disillusionment!
This is a new opening number as far as the UK are concerned - but remember we're not as lucky as the US and only see him twice a decade if we're lucky.
Of course it's a "marketing trick" though, because people who've never seen him live before will want to see the hits and the classics, and Paul himself is fully aware that when he plays new songs, the audience aren't quite as engaged as they are for the older songs.
He was never going to play six or seven new numbers in a million years, and everyone knew that before last night.
Why not?. He played 6 songs from FITD when he toured in 1989 and 6 songs from OTG in 1993.

But that’s not true- he is already playing 6 songs written in the last 7 years. It’s just that he left us with My Valentine (which had never gone over well with the audience) Queenie Eye (has been played lots over last three years) and 4/5 (which is embarrassing to hear from him)
none of those songs are being demanded by the “Beatle Paul” fans. So, why not change them to all Egypt Station? Laziness that’s why.
4/5 is really embarassing because he played such a minor role in the song and IMO it sucks.

I have to agree with you. And why the heck is he still doing Queenie Eye? Do another new song from ES, ffs!!

I like that he's still playing Queenie Eye.
Most of the times, when a new album came out, the one before it would be out of the setlist forever. At least he is still acknowledging New. Every time a new release is out, we got new fans of Paul coming to the shows. Some of them are discovering his solo career now, and when they'll be at the concert, will got the chance to hear a song from New, even its not his latest record.
I discovered The Beatles, and then Paul's solo career after The Beatles 09 Remasters, then went to the 'Up and Coming' tour and was expecting to hear at least one from Chaos and Creation, my favourite then.

Someone pointed out Paul had not played Canada in quite a while, hence the setlist being like it is, they said. The setlist would be new and fresh in Canada due to not being heard there in so long. Something like that.

I think everybody expected the main part of the show to be very much the same, it is just the lack of Egypt Station songs especially with the commercial success of the album. In addition, he has played more songs from his current album on other tours so it was surprising that he did not do more.
-
The reason might be as simple as Paul feels he and the band haven't yet rehearsed certain Egypt Station songs enough to perform as of now, in concert. And they're working on that !
It might be interesting if he features three of his "horny songs" in a row--"Hi Hi Hi" and then "Come On To Me" and "Fuh You." The "naughty" part of the show, LOL. Or even more of them right after each other..."Helter Skelter," "Rough Ride" which some listeners interpret as horny, "Girl" with tit tit tit in the background, "Honey Pie" and "Wild Honey Pie," and "Penny Lane" with the words "fish and finger pie" (blush), "Happiness is A Warm Gun," etc., although that last one is John's. The audience will have to take a cold shower afterwards
-
Why wouldn’t he play “I Don’t Know”?
its a great song from the new album, Paul himself said it was his favourite and would fit nicely into the piano set.
and it was also released as a single!

Absolutely ! That's the most obvious one (laughs) and I forgot it...oops

Re: Horn songs.
Got To Get You Into My Life?
Jet?
Silly Love Songs???
Despite Repeated Warnings (my favorite. He needs to add it to the show. It's like a new band on the run)

The first thing I would ask for, knowing Paul had a horn section, would be "Letting Go"...which is there, so I'm thrilled.
But yeah...you have those horns...use 'em! "Got To Get You Into My Life"! Seriously! lol
-
He might feel like certain songs aren't "big enough" to fill an arena or stadium, even "Despite Repeated Warnings" which starts out slow, and "I Don't Know." Concert goers who are into Egypt Station would certainly be thrilled, though. They're delighted with anything from ES being played. "Back in Brazil" would be a big treat and transporting. "Fuh You" strikes me as insanely catchy; it should rock the joint. Caesar Rock is a primal howl from his id..."Who Cares" rocks, is catchy. It should keep the momentum going, the high energy, and he did play it in Montreal (first time in concert?). Couldn't horns come in at some point in "Come On To Me"? Paul sounds so sassy on that, it's provocative. I fancy "Fuh You" a bit more. I love the heavenly choir in the first station and the ending station, on ES.
He explained recently he and the band need to rehearse more songs from ES before playing them live; don't you get it, more rehearsal time is needed. So much bitching. He explained why. All this complaining about the setlist must aggravate him at times.

Paul has all the time in the world. He scheduled the album release and the tour. Has nothing else to do. It's a lame excuse.

We don't know what all he has to do; we aren't privy to his schedule. He has a lot of family, for one thing. He has a big business to keep going with many different aspects; he even has an office building in London with five stories, to give an idea of how extensive his music business is. No doubt he's busier than you think. He also requires and deserves some relaxation time to recharge his batteries. He needs mini-vacations from it all. The Beatles took a lot of vacations, needing to after all the constant demands made on them 24/7.

Take a song like “Michelle.” He bothered to practice it and he’s only playing it in territories that have French ties.
The fact is that so far this tour has fewer new/different songs than previous ones, and it is a very noticeable difference.
Unlike his Beatles time, Paul is in control of his schedule. If he decides to tour, he can’t claim no time to learn songs. It’s just not credible.
-
Look, I’ve always defended his “ratio” of songs. I get why it is so Beatle/Wings heavy. I’ve been to enough concerts to know that by and large his instincts on what the crowd in front of him wants is correct.
What I don’t agree with is his static setlists and his massive holes in his solo catalogue. Once you except that the 6-7 pure solo songs are only for the diehards- you should give those diehards a treat. Give them Take it Away. Or Alligator. Make their day by dusting off Beautiful Night.
I want the Paul that boldly played Temporary Secretary more often.
