Set List critique

Did anyone really think the whole list was going to be changed? Ha ha.
Having gone to multiple shows and multiple years ... I always liked when some songs were rotated in and out. I would have a big Yes! Going through my thoughts sometimes said out loud as a good reaction.
I agree that some should be rotated out and another from the same album or time frame could be done.
It is what it is .... I am glad that he can still tour ... the only song changes that are likely to have more changes is the Soundcheck show. -

I just thought there would have been more than one song from "McCartney III". In addition, I was hoping like may others that he might have done something different like "I Want To Hold Your Hand" as an opening song. Maybe it is me but even the soundcheck list of songs is very stale.

The opening in Spokane was.....ordinary. His concert openings were once excellent, exciting, inspired and memorable. Very memorable. Instant grabbers! At best, "Can't Buy Me Love" was a middle of the concert song, not an opening. I guess had I never seen him in concert before, it would have been great...but it just wasn't. And, yes, he needs to drop "Maybe I'm Amazed." It's a song....however great.....that he just can't sing anymore.

I totally agree with you, the opening was very ordinary. It was thrilling when you heard the opening chord of "Hard Day's Night" and it set the mood for the evening. "Venus And Mars/Rock Show" was the all time classic opening IMO for a McCartney concert.

Hello Goodbye in 2002 was pretty great too! And his voice was still sublime even at age almost 60 then! ️

This thread started about 8 years ago and people were wanting the show not to be as focused on Beatle songs and to hear more solo/Wings stuff. After awhile, people like myself and BJ finally gave up and admitted to ourselves that would never happen. We then hoped that Paul would at least rotate the solo songs he played better and not just the 3-4 solo songs from his current album. We have now reached the point where we are hoping he does more than one song from his most recent album in his show - OMG
In regards to Beatle songs he does on his set list. It is one thing to play a not that well known song like "In Spite Of All Danger" for a tour but to repeat it is mind boggling to me when there are other cool Beatle songs he never did and plenty of great solo songs he has ignored.
Due to Paul only making one minor change last night, swapping out "Queenie Eye" for "New" it seems this set list is probably pretty much set. I guess to be fair, I should give him another few shows to see if he does make more changes.

[..] Maybe one day when you are in the biggest and most celebrated band the world has ever known, you will realise that other things you have achieved have to take a back seat because of that. Imagine watching a 'neil armstrong' interview and him just talking about the 1970s/1980s 1990s?........The folks turning up at these modern day paul mccartney concerts are getting exactly what they want and have paid big money for I really wish people on here would give it a rest and accept him for the marvel that he is. :
No need to be so defensive. Like said, no one is saying it's a sub-par show. Or even saying he shouldn't serve the masses. Or saying he should only play obscure songs. If Neil Armstrong would have been the first man on Venus in the 70's, and the first man on Mars in the 80's, it would be strange if 80% of interviews with him were concentrating on his 60's achievements.
Yes but thats only in your head....in reality or back in reality he is known and admired the world over for the music he made in the 1960's. Sure he has made some fine music since then and sure he has been a popular artist in his own right. But 90% of the people that go to see him are wanting to hear 90% beatles songs.....sorry that upsets you but its a FACT
In mine and many, many, many other fans heads. His target audience. But if you like being spoon-fed and bow for the masses who are being kept ignorant due to the treatment of the solo-material by McCartney himself, you sure won't mind that from his 25-odd worldwide top 10 solo hits in the 20 real-life years after The Beatles, he only has 5 included in the current setlist.
Going back to early on in this thread, like YankeeFan said, this has been a topic for quite awhile.

Yes, the "Venus and Mars/Rock Show" was THE Best!!! I remember the band taking the stage in the dark. The opening notes began....and then Paul's voice.....and then the stage lights went up when the band really kicked in with some heavy rocking! I thought, OMG...I'm seeing a Beatle!!!! He could almost replicate that with "We're Open Tonight" right into "Getting Closer."

That's my memory too of the Wembley show, the last night of the 75/76 tour. But you missed out the bubbles?

Just looking at Seattle's Setlist last night...I was again a little disappointed in one specific area. I am over the current status of his voice. It is what it is. After watching the full cam video of the complete Spokane show, I was amazed at the effort he put into his singing in Spokane. He was giving it 120%
You can quibble over the songs in the Setlist especially a few of them. The biggest frustration I had after seeing Seattle's Setlist, however, was the fact that he still only does one song from McCartney 3. I don't understand it! I really want to see how the full band (including the horn section) does "Find My Way". I would think it would be a little different than what's on the album since he did Find My Way by himself. As a big time fan, that is what I would want to see and hear.
On top of "Women and Wives" which he did very well at both shows, I want him to do "Seize the Day". Like "Husbands and Wives", this song has great lyrics. Again, I want to see how the full Band does the song.
Finally, I want Paul to do "Slidin" again from McCartney 3. I want to hear the full Band doing this great rocker.
Basically I just want to hear those 3 songs added to the Setlist and I would be very satisfied.

I agree very much with this. I was guessing before the show rhat he was going to do 3 songs from the album - because after all it is McCartney 3. I think these 3 songs would be great to see and hear live. It does depend on how Paul feels about singing them, if he can as a concert song - would sound good and there is enough energy in them to not lose the casual unknowing fan.

Thank God he dropped Queenie Eye and added New! (still want him to do I Can Bet though)

It is mind boggling to me that this is the least amount of songs he has done live from a recent album that I can remember. He did three from "Egypt Station" (Come On To Me, Fuh You, Who Cares) the last tour and he is still doing two of them. Paul did three songs from "New" (New, Queenie Eye, Save Us) when it was his most current album and still does one song from that album. I am pretty sure that he did at least two songs (Dance Tonight, Only Mama Knows) and there were places like Paris where he also added "That Was Me" and "House of Wax" from MAF. Heck, the Fireman album (Electric Arguments) had more songs done live (Highway, Sing The Changes) than "McCartney III" Like you I don't get it.

I also would love "I Can Bet" but that is not happening -lol. I think "Dance Tonight" also stays in set list because it is very easy to sing. I have a feeling he will not totally drop "Queenie Eye", will probably play it some nights and "New" the other nights.

Of course, that was 1976. "Venus and Mars/Rock Show was the opening of a huge hit album from just the year before. Everyone at the concert knew it. Paul was a current hitmaker then. If he did the same opening now, two thirds of the audience would go "Huh?" If he did "We're Open Tonight" it would be three quarters of the audience.

I never thought I would have to say something like this: For me this sad setlist "composition" reached the point that I'm happy that Paul isn't touring in my area...
I checked the setlist form the second Seattle Show. He did replaced woman and wives with let'em in... that means no Macca III song in that show ! I'm without words considering the fact that songs like this are perfect for the current level of voice. It's the same like "Confident" before. IMO this song did sounded very well during the three gig's McCartney performed it 2008
. Never understand why songs like I don't know: Alligator ,on my way to work or sun is shining never got a real chance to get into or stay in the setlist.... Together with songs like every present past, mr. bellamy , dominoes, find my way ... which never played live. On the other side there are songs like mr. kite (lennon), helter skelter, something (harrion) ob la di, or 1985 (performed over 300 times) which could easy take a break. For a fan of macca's complete lifework that's all a big disappointment...
I'm happy that I had the chance to listen songs like come and get it, wonderful christimas time, I'm looking thru you, another girl, ram on, only mama knows, temporary secr., flaming pie, calico skies, every night live and at least on my way to work, everybody out there, bluebird during soundchecks. Now I'm more than unsure whether I would pay again for a show which isn't updated enough in every aspect.
Why doesn't he performe people want peace + give peace as chance reprise now? I wish someone would asked him in an interview

Very good post Mr. Flaming Pie. His Solo Career has unfortunately taken a "Back Seat".
I love the man and he does give it his all as far as a full show. As I said on a previous Post, I would be happy with 3 songs from McCartney 3...Seize the Day, Find My Way and Slidin plus keeping "Women and Wives" in the Setlist. It was one of the few songs that he sung well.
