Something I haven't seen remarked on (though maybe I've just missed it): The cassette with John's demo of "Now and Then" was in an envelope he'd marked, "For Paul." We'll never know what John was thinking when he wrote the sone, but it certainly could certainly be taken as a message to Paul. Given that it was written at a time when they were getting along better after a few difficult years, that intuitively makes sense.
Now imagine you're Paul McCartney. After being traumatized by your close friend's death and having written a song, "Here Today," that was in essence a deeply personal letter to John, a dozen years later you hear John's voice from beyond the grave singing astonishingly similar sentiments, apparently addressed to you. I don't know about you, but if I were Paul I think I'd have cried for a week.
No wonder he was so determined to get this out into the world.
I also thought the song might have been written for Paul, cos of the handwritten envelope "For Paul". And the lyrics fit beautifully well with that sentiment. I have read elsewhere that it was a song for Yoko, but I don't think the critics know. I'd like to think it was for Paul. It does make sense. John tucked the demo away, didn't revisit it for Double Fantasy because those songs were for Yoko (and Sean). Not including Now and Then. 'Cos it was not written for Yoko? (Then again, he may have just thought the song didn't fit)
So, it could very well have been written to and for Paul. And it makes the song and lyrics even more beautiful.
It's entirely possible John was thinking of both Paul and Yoko when he wrote it -- he'd gone through rough patches with both of them and then reconciled. We'll never know. But I'd bet everything I own that Paul heard it as a message to him, and it's not unreasonable that he did.

I had two thoughts on what you mentioned. When John wrote "For Paul" did he mean the song was about him and John was missing his childhood friend. Maybe the "For Paul" was in hope that John wanted Paul to hear the demo and maybe work on it one day in the future with him.
I think the song was for and about Paul. Listen to the lyrics!
"Now And Then"
I know it's true
It's all because of you
And, if I make it through
It's all because of youAnd, now and then
If we must start again
Well, we will know for sure
That I will love youNow and then
I miss you
Oh, now and then
I want you to be there for me
Always to return to meI know it's true
It's all because of you
And, if you go away
I know you'll never stayNow and then
I miss you
Oh, now and then
I want you to be there for me(Ahh)
(Ahh)
(Ahh)
(Ooh)
(Ahh)I know it's true
It's all because of you
And, if I make it through
It's all because of you -

This seems to be the case with the final Beatles version of the song, BUT not with the original demo by Lennon:
[Verse 1]
I know it's true
It's all because of you
And if I make it through
It's all because of you[Chorus]
And now and then (Ah-ah)
If we must start again (Ah-ah)
Well, we will know for sure
That I love you[Verse 2]
I don't wanna lose you, oh no, no
Abuse you or confuse you
Oh no, no, sweet darlin'
But if you have to go (Go), away (Ah-ah-ah)
If you have to go, well you the reason [?][Chorus]
Now (Now) and then (And then)
I miss you (I miss you)
Oh, now (Now) and then (And then)
I want you to return to me
'Til you return to me

I think it was meant for Yoko.

Oh, today....there are 16 trillion versions of "Now and Then" and even tributes of friends before and after using the title of the song, only; My favorite one is the long version...actually it's the 4:08 song repeated for an hour.

@mrflamingpie True. Maybe he just meant “For Paul” as in “Give this to Paul.”

Yoko could probably shed some light on the origins of the song. But I don't think she is all that well. Plus, her version of events may be grainy. Sean is doing a great job in keeping his father's light alive. Does he know who it was written for?... Neither saying anything. Sadly - And I may have missed something - but I haven't heard anything from Julian. He has every right to comment on the song as much as anyone.... Have I missed something? Haven't heard from him.... Or, have I just missed it?
ps. I think Cynthia and Julian are wonderful. Put up with a lot of shite! Julian would've loved his Dad, from a distance, but his Mum was the REAL HERO in bringing him up. And he knows that. She was a real mother.... Women usually are the real heroes.
I digress.... and clamp my lips for the rest of the night.

Am i blind or have all mentions of that been took down? The guy who said he did it never answered did he play all of it then or just the bridge? Did admin remove it all for copyright, seeing as it wasn't clear it was a fan cover as it was passed off as original...?

LOL! Yes, apparently a mod moved the conversation to "Macca Covers". HUH?

The world isn't always one or the other, black or white. It's entirely possible John wrote this thinking of Yoko, but at some point also thought, "Some of this could be about Paul, too." Since the thing was an unfinished work in progress, he may never have talked about it in detail to anyone. But I think there's little doubt Paul took some of the lines as being at least partly about him.

ICYMI, "Now and Then" is the official no. 1 song in the UK. Billboard's U.S. chart doesn't come out till n ext week.

It was moved to "Macca Covers". I played everything and sang harmonies on the bridge - everything except for Ringo's drums and John's vocals from the demo.
