Setlists

@njr I too.
but I would like to understand it on the psycholgical level. The contradiction of McCartney's huge musical ability and the meagre variations of the setlist (regardless of how Beatles song-heavy everything is... ) + the same old stories remains a mystery to me . What happened to songs like Night Before, Another Girl or Your Mother Should Know? Other permanent live songs could easily be replaced with this songs....

Exactly. Something off his latest album (McCartney III) or even different song from "Egypt Station".

Re: Setlists
I’m not perse disagreeing with what has been said before, but we havent seen changes like the recent changes in the setlist (YNGMYM, she’s a woman and coming up) in years. They all haven’t been done in over ten years. So, relatively, these are real surprises in the setlist

I know myself and others consider "surprises" as a song he never has done live before and not something that he did a bunch of years ago. If Paul suddenly did "Find My Way" from "McCartney III" that would be a nice surprise. Imagine if Paul did something like "Rocky Raccoon", that would be epic surprise.

Whether we like it or not, Paul has a long history of never swapping out more than a couple songs from show to show. He clearly likes to keep things pretty much as-is from night tonight. He ain't going to change now.

I second that emotion!

I saw today that Paul makes mention in his Australian tour book that he feels an obligation to play all the hits for the people who spend hard-earned money... And, I think rightfully so, as much as I'm part of the 2.5% in the audience that want the lesser-known tracks... but, in the program book, apparently... he says... One of these days, he is going to put on a "nerd show" to satisfy the deep fans... Let's hope so!!!!
I saw it on a You Tube "video" from a guy called Elliot Roberts, who is pretty good. Very good, actually.
I didn't have time to buy the program, or collect all the freebies that were part of my ticket, cos the place was absolutely packed!!.... It was tiny-footsteps-central, moving around from the carpark, to the entrance, to the right level, to the seats, to the right aisle, to the right seats.... It was crazy!
Don't know if anyone else saw that in the program book.

I'd take Rocky Racoon every time! And Why Don't We do it in the Road.... and my favorite Paul cover, Til There Was You.... And I will never, ever argue if he opens a set with Venus and Mars / Rockshow.

He did "Venus & Mars/Rock show" again a bunch of years ago but sadly he cut it short for some dumb reason.

Paul is 81 and I will bet everything I own he will not do a "nerd" show. My goodness, he can't even do one song from his latest album (McCartney III) in his Australian tour. Paul doing a "nerd" show would take a bunch of effort and does anybody imagine Paul taking the time to rehearse that type of show with his band. (I don't -lol). Then the simple facts of doing that type of show would mean Paul would have to play small venue because he is not going to sell out stadiums/arena with a "nerd" show. This means Paul would not make the "big time" money that he does on normal tours. Finally, Paul has big ego and loves the huge reaction to his Beatle hits. Can't imagine he would like to do show where he probably at best would get a little more than polite applause the entire show.

"Find My Way", "Seize The Day" and "Slidin" are three very good songs (McCartney III) that would have been better choices than doing "Coming Up" again. Once again, Paul amazes me with his choices. "Egypt Station" has songs like "Who Cares", "I Don't Know" and "Dominoes" which would have been good selections also. I would have loved for him to do a song like "I Can Bet" off the album "New".

@yankeefan2 Agree totally!

@yankeefan2
I couldn't agree more with your choices. All of the songs you listed are great songs and "I Can Bet"is a terrific "Deep Cut". I still can't believe that the "Got Back" tour doesn't include any songs from McCartney 3. To make matters worse, the 2 Songs from his next latest Album (Egypt Station) Paul selects the 2 Worse Songs on that very good album.
You would think that Paul would want to prove that he's still writing very good songs. It's a shame that one of his adult kids aren't making the track list choices for their Dad. I know that the very astute critic Rob Sheffield (from Rolling Stone) wouldn't have liked this latest Setlist.What happened to the "defiant" Paul McCartney of 1976. That was a time when Paul was daring his critics to come to one of his concerts to see for themselves if he can give a good concert. Wings Over America proved to be one of the Best Concerts of the Decade. I think Paul and his Band only did a total of 5 Beatle songs on that tour.
Like Yankeff has said, I understand in the 2020's that Paul has to do the majority of songs from his Beatle days, but what does it say about an artist that refuses to do his "Best" recent songs. I think that "I Don't Know". Dominoes" Find My Way", "Slidin",
Seize the Day," and "Who Cares" are among Paul McCartney's Best Post Beatle Songs ever. How can he do a current Concert without doing any of his best new songs. -

Wings Over America proved to be one of the Best Concerts of the Decade. I think Paul and his Band only did a total of 5 Beatle songs on that tour."That was when Paul felt he had something to prove, and that ship has sailed a long time ago. I gave him credit during the 1989/90 tour when he played a bunch of songs from FITD and he actually opened the show with "Figure of Eight". In interview during that tour, Paul said he opened with that song because he wanted to show he was still a relevant artist. Wish he would have still felt that way years longer. The chance we had of Paul possibly doing more solo songs was the DR tour but that is when Paul started to veer towards a more Beatle heavy show and the rest is history - ha ha.
For the last decade Paul is very comfortable with doing mostly the same setlist with some tweaks and they are usually different Beatle songs. If you notice the pattern of Paul's tours lately, he goes to places he has never played before or countries he has not played in a long time (exp. Australia). This way he can play pretty much the same set list he has done for years but it is all very new to these audiences.
"I understand in the 2020's that Paul has to do the majority of songs from his Beatle days, but what does it say about an artist that refuses to do his "Best" recent songs. I think that "I Don't Know". Dominoes" Find My Way", "Slidin",

How can he do a current Concert without doing any of his best new songs."My simple answer is that Paul does not feel these songs measure up to his past and the audience will be let down if he plays too many of them. While other artists embrace their solo career in concert after they left their famous band, Paul just throws a few solo songs in setlist to make it look like it is not a total "oldies" show. The other thing is that our idea of his best songs and his are totally different (exp. Fuh You, Temporary Secretary etc.).
"It's a shame that one of his adult kids aren't making the track list choices for their Dad. I know that the very astute critic Rob Sheffield (from Rolling Stone) wouldn't have liked this latest Setlist."
I don't know why but my gut feeling is Paul's adult kids probably love his current setlist and are very much into his Beatle music. If anybody knows something different, let me know -lol. The really frustrating thing is that the critics have really for the most part been very positive about Paul's new albums the last 20-25 years. You would think that would give Paul more confidence to play different songs from his last few albums. I always wonder if his band gets bored with the setlist, or they don't give a damn because they get paid pretty well.
I will wrap this up with nothing is really going to change. Paul is making gobs of money and getting rave reviews. In his eyes, why "rock the boat" -lol.

Too true. He's not going to do a "nerd" tour. But, hey, he might do a one-off concert... And release it... But, yeah, the chances of us seeing it are as slim as next to nothing. But, who knows.... he could do it as a one-off special. 25-30 songs where he gets the input from the fans on his official forum.... I'd take that!.... Yeah, I know, I'm probably dreaming.

Yes! I also suspect that he means something like that at best. At the end it's like Cavern Club (2018) or Pappy & Harriet's (2016) with a somewhat more daring setlist like the surpirse gig's 1991.
