"New" Reviews

Where is that Rolling Stone review. Someone here said it got 4 Stars and is on the their list for Best Albums in 2013 but I haven't seen anything yet about this. Is is coming out in their next issue? When would that be?
I believe the post said it is the next issue. I would expect to see it online by the end of the weekend.

Daily Mail...5 stars! http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-2453614/Paul-McCartney-new-release-New-Album-week.html
How great for them to like it! LOve this: Tuneful and poppy, but with an intuitive rock ?n? roll edge, New casts a wistful eye towards Macca?s illustrious past, but is far too vibrant and inventive to degenerate into pastiche.
-
Even if it doesnt go to # ! .. I'll still like him
-
These are the best reviews Paul has received since 'Tug of War' at least. As a result, 'New' should be as big a seller as 'Band on the Run'.
-
(But I'll still like him and "New" even if it doesn't go to #1)

Yup - various reviews range from great to somewhat luke warm, but still positive....no one has come out to say it flat out stinks, and that's a good thing given that some of the reviews are from sites historically tough on Paul

No one would dare say "it flat out stinks". Even those that are "lukewarm" (which ones are those??) are simply reviewing "Paul," not the album.

Entertainment Weekly has given it a glowing A- review (with nary a critical word) and the Chicago Tribune goes further with a full five stars and acknowledging what many of us have known for some time -- that Paul is a fearless and unrelenting experimenter.

Interesting call there Ammar, funny I didn't notice that! Save Yourself, Scared, Old Dirt Road.. Even that line 'don't look at me' from new perhaps . Hm.

Thanks for these reviews Bruce. They have certainly uplifted my spirits after reading the one from the Guardian. That review really irked me. Finally getting some reviews from critics that are looking at the whole album objectively and that are not anti-Paul people before they even listen to the first track. Looking at the lyrics to some of the songs, it looks like there is some depth in "NEW" (a la Chaos) but at the same time much more up-tempo than the latter. And the critics seem to call different songs as "standouts". Even the guy from the Guardian begrudgingly really liked 3 or 4 of the songs (and not the ones we've heard so far). Can't wait to hear "NEW". Did the Chicago Sun reviewer rate "NEW"? I didn't see a rating.

They don't seem to do ratings in the form of numbers, stars, etc. I'm dreading what my hometown paper, the San Francisco Chronicle, does this week. Their pop music critic, Aidin Vaziri, is one of those writers who is much more interested in being clever than in understanding music. His snarky review of "Chaos" slammed it for being too upbeat, cheerful and self-contented. Really. The album has some weaknesses, but those aren't among them. He liked MAF better, but again seems to have not actually been paying much attention when he listened.

Yup. 4 Stars and a good review in the latest issue of Rolling Stone! I'll be damned.

HERE WE ARE...THE WEEKEND BEFORE US RELEASE DATE Any day now we shoud be seeing the big "national" US music reviews on "NEW". The big 3 in my mind are: Rolling Stone US Today People All 3 are big and could have a significant effect on the overall sales of NEW (not just the 1st week) because they have such a large audience and wide demographic. I'm not talking about us boardies or Paul's fans buying the album but casual baby boomers and younger generations possibly buying "New". Positive reviews from these 3 will have a lot to do with NEW potentially having "legs". Here's my rundown (predictions and hopes) of these very important reviews: Rolling Stone - First of all, the 4 star review mentioned on this thread was actually for New, the song. The actual RS Review has not come out (maybe on line tomorrow night). The review on the single was good (4 stars) so maybe this bodes well for the album. My RS Prediction My guess is that RS will give the album a good but not glowing review. Not sure that their top managment would allow it even if one of their reviewers loved it. I'm thinking that RS is too concerned with their "hip" reputation and Paul doesn't represent that image. Paul is too Pop for them even if his Pop is good. Neverless, a good review from RS would certainly be a victory. My RS Hope I obviously be thrilled if it was a very good to excellent review (i.e. 4 stars) ____________________________________________________________ People Magazine - largest weekly magaine and it has a definite Music Column in all its regular issues (along with Movies and TV). Chuck Arnold is their music critic. Looking at the photo of Chuck, he appears to be in his mid-40's or a little older. Reading his reviews on a regular basis, I think that Chuck prides himself on keeping up with all the current trends. He seems fair and he gives good grades on quality music no matter what the genre. 2 Weeks ago he gave a very good short critique on "New" the single (4 stars I believe). My People Prediction Based on how Chuck liked the song "New" and how strong the early US and Canada reviews have been, I predict that Chuck will give the album a good to very good review (3 to 3 and 1/2 stars) My People Hope Chuck goes bonkers and gives NEW a 4 star review. _________________________________________________________ USA Today - the biggest USA daily newspaper that has a regular NewMusic Feature every Tuesday. Compared to the other 2 publications, I have less of a feel for what may happen here. Like RS and People, it can be very significant. I would have a better feel if I knew that their regular rock critic, Edna Gunderson, would be doing the actual review. I recently noticed that Edna did not do the review on Elton's latest just a few weeks ago. Elton's album was reviewed by Jerry Shiver who I don't know from a history point of view. If Edna ends up doing the review, I would be confident again judging by the early US reviews that Paul would get a good, favorable review. My USA Today Prediction Regardless of who does the review, I think USA Today critics as a whole are fair and NEW will get at least a good review (i.e. 3 stars) My USA Today Hope Paul get a very good and highly favorable review (4 stars) ___________________________________________________________ The key here is that Paul gets a good, positive review from all 3 publications. If that happens, New might have legs and be the biggest Solo album of Pauls since Tug of War. Crunch time is definitely here. PS If anyone sees the RS, USA Today or People reviews On-Line before their Publication Date, please let us know. thanks

The notion that Rolling Stone management wouldn't allow a strongly positive review of New is a load of hooey. Check out their 4-star review of "Chaos," which actually reads like it could almost be a 5-star review: http://www.rollingstone.com/music/albumreviews/chaos-and-creation-in-the-backyard-20050922

BJ, Rolling Stone did give the album four stars. The magazine's out, it just hasn't been posted online yet.
