Pure McCartney

Was this the same interview where Paul Mc. expressed lack of confidence in his song writing ability? Was startled to read his thoughts on this. He's a genius at melodies, has been assured of that repeatedly with many honors and awards, and is no slouch at writing lyrics to fit those exquisite melodies...maybe he takes his huge gift for granted, somehow thinks anyone could do it. Was it because he can't read and write sheet music, but you don't have to know this in order to write songs.

______________________________________________________ Susy, He had mentioned things like this in several articles. His point basically is that he doesn't want to know "how to" write songs. He doesn't want to devise a specific formula because it might inhibit his creativity and "child like" inventiveness. It isn't that he doesn't have confidence but it is like the less he knows about songwriting the better.

Listening to the 4 CD version. Great stuff Paul has been long overdue a best of collection. Ok there are a few glaring omissions my brave face and hope of deliverance being an example. Some nice photos in the booklet but I would like to have had more information about the songs the story behind them for example. We know the story behind every Beatles song but Paul's solo career is poorly documented.
Unless you have my book...
I do and its excellent.

Thoughts - Arrow Through Me sounds terrible. The vocals are way smoothed out. Too Much Rain is better the record. The vocals are brighter, and the guitar has more clarity The acoustic guitar in Sing The Changes has more clarity With A Little Luck edit is terrible. Say Say Say remix sounds really nice Calico Skies sounds more crisp Warm and Beautiful is more crisp overall - piano has more clarity Overall it's a nice collection. I like it a lot.

Does anyone have an opinion/review of the LPs vs the CDs? Are the LPs from digital sources?

Just received the 4 cd set, I love the package and the book! I haven't had time to listen to it yet, saving it for a road trip in two weeks' time when Paul is playing in Denmark. It hurts that there are no Flowers In the Dirt songs on it because I love that album so much. My Brave Face and Distractions are playing in my mind right now, boy I'm ready for that remaster! In years to come when people buy this compilation, they won't know the commercial reasons why Flowers isn' t represented here. But nevermind, when Flowers is reissued, I will put that disc into this package too, and that will be my real road trip companion..ð??? Always a pleasure with a release from Macca!

As I have thought more about the initial Pure McCartney release, I can't help think about comparisons to the great Godfather movies. Most movie reviewers actually put Godfather 2 above Godfather 1 for deeper character development etc. Looking at the list of songs still available for a Pure McCartney 2 Compilation, I believe the same could be true. While this initial Pure McCartney might be more commercial (more singles, more top 40 songs) compared to a follow-up, the fact is that in many cases the best, deeper and more meaningful songs are not singles but great album tracks. For the true McCartney fans, a Pure McCartney 2 can have an incredible mix of great, top tier McCartney songs. And he could add a few of the best unreleased songs for the hard core fans. Unfortunately, we might have to wait 5 years for a Pure Mccartney 2 release.

Just to play around and put in a playlist for Pure McCartney 2 based on my previous post, I have done just that. Because there are so many songs and I wanted to keep it to a 4 cd (like Pure McCartney 1) I decided not to include any singles, B-sides, unreleased songs, live versions etc. These songs are just album tracks. Also I'm not suggesting the order listed below. I just went by album sequence from the beginning. Here goes: 1. That Would Be Something 2. Oo You 3. Ram On 4. Smile Away 5. Eat At Home 6. Monkberry Moon Delight 7. Tomorrow 8. Dear Friend 9. Some People Never Know 10. Get On the Right Thing 11. Little Lamb Dragonfly 12. Single Pigeon 13. Bluebird 14. Love In Song 15. Magneto and Titanium Man 16. Letting Go 17. Call Me Back Again 18. Beware My Love 19. I'm Carrying 20. London Town 21. Name and Address 22. Getting Closer 23. Spin It On 24. Winter Rose/Love Awakes 25. So Glad to See You Here 26. Summer's Day Song 27. One of These Days 28. Take It Away 29. Tug of War 30. The Pound is Sinking 31. Somebody Who cares 32. Ballroom Dancing 33. The Other Me 34. Keep Under Cover 35. Through Our Love 36. So Bad (Broadstreet Version) 37. No Values 38. Footprints 39. Stanglehold 40. Only Loves Remain 41. Move Over Busker 42. My Brave Face 43. We Got Married 44. Figure of 8 45. This One 46. Distractions 47. Hope of Deliverance 48. Golden Earth Girl 49. The Lovers that Never Were 50. I Owe It All to You. 51. Somedays 52. Young Boy 53. Run Devil Run 54. What It is 55. Lonely Road 56. About You 57. Your Loving Flame 58. At the Mercy 59. Promise to You Girl 60. Friends to Go 61. Ever Present Past 62. That Was Me 63. House of Wax 64. The End of the End 65. Mr. Bellamy 66. Dance Till We're High 67. Sun is Shining 68. Alligator I ask you...would this proposed Pure McCartney 2 be just as good as the first one. Yes we can always quibble about a song or two above but you have to admit on the whole these are good to great songs with a diverse mix of rock, pop etc. I don't believe there are any duplications here. Pure McCartney 3 could then be a combination of singles and b-sides (not included in either Pure McCartney 1 or 2) rarities and unreleased tracks and still some album tracks not included above. This would also be a great compilation for the hard core fans considering Macca's huge catalog.

Well done, #3 on the UK charts.

This is really great news! The collection is also in the top ten in Belgium (3), the Netherlands (7), Germany (7) and Ireland (7). I have been listening to the deluxe edition - and I am surprised that this compilation really works. It is a real joy to listen to - and the remastering sounds great! Anyway, I still insist on a Vol.2 - containing all the great songs that were left out.

Really pleased and a bit surprised that this made it to #3 in the UK album chart. A follow up would be good - call it Impure McCartney! And if its true that it was an MPL office worker who was the inspiration behind this compilation, perhaps she could put together a setlist too!

___________________________________________________________ Jock, Agreed. I will be very curious to see where it lands in the US. We should here this week. As far as follow ups... Paul could easily do 2 more sequels. Just look at the list on the previous page and that is still leaving out many good album tracks and B-sides, rarities, unreleased etc.

Great that Paul is in the Top Ten again! First I wasn't sure about Pure McCartney. But now it's fun listening to it. Especially in the car. It's fantastic to see (hear...) the musical diversity. PS.: Sometimes I wish that some songs weren't produced in the 80s. I don't like that sound too much.

Pure McCartney enter US charts at #43. Not too impressive. Too many great songs left off.
-
I agree with most of the negatives regarding the compilation---but being a fan I still got it. Maybe he should've named it Road Trip. 67 songs would've covered a lot of great stuff from each album, a retrospective, or an updated 4 disc Wingspan Hits and History would've been much better IMO. Oh well, I like the book it's packaged in. I would've preferred to get the complete re-issues

Agreed. A lost opportunity. Bring on Flowers in the Dirt archive release.

While I think that is a totally stupid title, I agree a Vol. II with more b-sides and deep tracks would be welcome. ops:

This was bound to be just like his concerts. People on the board are going to complain. Sheesh! This is 4 CD's or LP's of brilliance! :
