ohoh...you go sit in the corner.
just kidding of course.
I'm just one of those fans who isn't in the 'If its Paul then its got to be great' camp. He's written better songs that 'Fuh You'... hundreds of them in fact. Any Wings b-side would be a good starting place to find them.
Oh neither am I. I don't wear those fake rose tinted glasses either. But this song is catchy...IMO.

So we have heard from the two most negative people on this site, Bruce and Kestrel. Mediocre and Dreadful? Yikes. Such McCartney fans. I think I'll go for a nice run and listen to Fuh You, I Don't Know, and Come On To Me over and over and over! And over.

So was 'Ou Est Le Soleil' and that was a bit...well, nothing special either. I like Paul's songs which have a bit more ...substance !!

Fair enough if you genuinely like the songs but I kind of suspect that you probably wouldn't even give them a second listen had they been by anyone else other than Paul McCartney?

I hope Paul just didn't "shoot himself in the foot" with the release of "Fuh You" as an "Internet" single.
Yes, it is catchy but judging by the tremendous amount of comments on "Youtube", the overwhelming number of responses are very negative. Here are the basic complaints:
*you can tell that many of the responders are actual Paul fans and they don't like the "too modern" sounds. The typicical reponse is....sounds like every other song on the radio today.
*Paul is back being "promoter Paul"...."Fuh You" is way too much of a gimmick type song trying too hard to attract attention. "Your better than this" is the typical response.
* The lyrics are way too suggestive especially for a 76 year old man...kind of creepy for a man his age
__________________________________________________________________
I want to wait and make a final judgement until I hear the whole album. "Fuh You" may be one I skip but at least it is only a little over 3 minutes. It is catchy and may fit well in the context of the whole album.
The problem I see with releasing it as an Internet single is that it might result in basic "negative" publicity. It could end up actually "hurting sales" for the whole album. Critics who dislike Paul to begin with, may put such a negative label on "Fuh You" (poster child for negatives reviews) that Paul's base audience won't buy Egypt Station. Many people who like Paul judging by the initial responses are already turned off. Paul's audience is Beatle sounding songs and "Fuh You" is certainly not it. Even if Paul is trying to appeal to the millenials and similar age groups, they certainly are not buyers of Paul McCartney. Highlighing "Fuh You" is a gamble indeed in my opinion.
I do like the other 2 songs..."I Don't know" is a classic Paul ballad and "Come On to Me" while modern sounding has much more Beatle/Wings elements and doesn't come off as a gimmick. Time will tell.
I've noticed on many of the internet articles about "Fuh You"...Paul is really emphasizing the this is the only song on Egypt Station where he used Ryan Tedder as his Producer and that "all" the others he's with Greg Kustin. Between the lines, I think he is saying that his songs with Greg are more McCartney type songs. Paul has also said that he doesn't care if "Fuh You" doesn't get played on the radio at all and that every album needs "promotion". Interesting the Sirius Beatles channel is playing it!
So while Paul is letting his fans know (casual and hard core) that "Fuh You" is definitely "different" from the rest of the album, it is risky in my opinion. Not so much for the hard core fans like us (we'll buy the album anyway) but it is certainly a huge gamble with his casual base. These are the overwhelming majority...the casual Beatle and Paul fans. By Paul promoting "Fuh You" as one of the bigger songs on the album and putting it on YouTube, his risk is that many of the casuals will decide to "pass" on the album. Because of all the reasons listed above (and more) it might effect initial sales of the album big time.
I've noticed that when the Double A singles were released (I Don't Know and Come On To Me) the overwhelming majority of Youtube responders were conversely quite "Positive". Hopefully, many of the "casuals" will remember that and end up buying Egypt Station anyway despite not liking "Fuh You" even a little bit.

Kestrel,
I do agree with you 100%. One of the reasons I'm a big fan of Paul's Solo Catalog is that from Tug of War onward, Paul has written many songs that have more meaningful, mature lyrics....more substance as you say. There are many songs from Tug of War, Flowers in the Dirt, Flaming Pie, Chaos, Memory Almost Full etc. where the lyrics and subject matter are especially good.
I'm still very optimistic about Egypt Station because we've only heard 3 songs. On many Paul albums, it is the deep cuts, hidden gems that I like the best. Your example of Scared from New is a great one. Press to Play is also a good example. While "Press" (the song) was the single getting all the publicity, it turned out to be one of my least favorite songs on the album. Conversely, Footprints a song that was never discussed is one of my absolute favorite songs on Press to Play. It is miles better than Press in my opinion.
So far I like "I Don't Know" the best. Love the music and the lyrics have a lot of substance in my opinion. I also like "Come On To Me" pretty well mostly for the combination of instruments. Those 2 songs have great production in my opinion. Greg Kurstin is the producer for those 2 plus all the rest of the songs on Egypt Station with the exception of "Fuh You" (Ryan Tedder) so I am optimistic. I'm hoping that there are at least 4 or 5 songs on the album that I like better than all of the 3 singles so far. The other thing is that I'm deliberately not listening to the 3 singles on Youtube at this point. I want to see how all the songs "gell"together first. I have my doubts that "Fuh You" for example will be one of my favs but I want to wait and be objective.

I Just WANNA... PG19 Rating! LOL!

Regarding the various formats of the album, I ordered the deluxe black vinyl edition from Virgin EMI via Paul's website not long after the album was announced, but although I've not seen any indication that my order will be cancelled, that item is no longer listed there. Anybody else in the same boat? It is still listed on Amazon for £40.99.
-
If not being willing to say that because it's Paul it's by definition brilliant makes me the most negative person on the site, I happily confess. Though I've defended many songs (e.g. "Feet in the Clouds") that others don't like, I guess I'm just a mean, vicious, hateful person who's come here to troll you all.
Meanwhile, does anyone find it odd that Fuh You is indeed #1 on the Amazon digital songs chart, but doesn't seem to even chart on iTunes or Spotify at the moment? Some variation between formats/sellers would be normal, but this seems ... odd.
-
I just looked at the reviews on Amazon. Only three, but all are either 5 stars or 1 star -- nothing in between. This may be a "love it or hate it" kind of tune. I don't think I'll be switching to the love it camp anytime soon.
-
Well, I'm in the like it camp on Fuh....
Think its catchy as hell, might have been even better as a country rocker....
But I think I like it because its nothing like the other two songs... it's different. Its poppy, its easy on the ears and it's Paul reaching past the normal stuff.
No question its a dividing song, with alot of detractors out there (and yes they are welcome to their opinion and as such should be respected for that.) But I do like it. When I first heard it I was having a terrible day and it lifted me right out of that bad mood. The power of Paul....

Fuh you is catchy enough, but not for me. Hopeful that's it turns out to be the low point of the new album.

Don't want to take this thread off subject but I would like to say that "Footprints" was my favourite track off Press to Play too...and "Press" my least favourite. Nothing dates an album more than the technology used to record it and as a result PTP suffers from that cold clinical sound of the 80's. "Footprints" is a beautiful song that's slightly marred by a cluttered arrangement.I'd love Paul to do that one again...unplugged.
Back on subject,I'm very optimistic too. I'm certainly not going to judge the album on three 'singles'. I think Paul works at his best when he's not consciously trying to be 'commercial' and just writes from the gut. That's one of the reasons why I enjoy 'McCartney II' so much even though its never been one of his most popular albums.

There's always going to be some songs that people like more than others on an album. Anyone can name their favorite albums and always think of the songs they like best... or least.
I don't know what the big deal is about him saying "Fuh You" - have always heard the lyrics as "I wan' it fuh you" rather than "wanna FUH you" Guess we'll find out when we're able to see the lyrics on the album cover.
If anyone out there in the general public doesn't like the lyrics, and make too much of a big deal about it, I feel people should just "fuh-gettaboutit". There are much more explicit lyrics out there by other recording artists, this is pretty tame in comparison.
*proud to put on my tinted shades*

Bruce,
Your comments are always wecome on this Site. What makes being a Macca fan so great is that there are always varied opinions about certain songs/albums. No doubt, "Fuh You" is going to be one of those "love or hate" songs in Paul's huge catalog.
Speaking of Memory Almost Full, you were the one that got me thinking of "Nod Your Head" in a whole different way (as a fun, wacky song after the so serious "The End of the End"). Now I really like "Nod Your Head" as the album's closer. By the way, one of my favorite sections on MAF is the quasi-medley which includes "Feet in the Clouds". Love those songs.

The bolded songs above are more than likely made up titles or not connected to Egypt Station. It was reported at the recent listening parties that only 22 songs were recorded so that would give us:
01. Come On To Me
02. I Don't Know
03. Station I
04. Station II
05. Happy With You
06. People Want Peace
07. Despite Repeated Warnings
08. Fuh You
09. Back In Brazil [3-4 alternate versions exists]
10. Confidante
11. Hunt You Down
12. Who Cares
13. Hand In Hand
14. Do It Now
15. Dominoes
16. Naked
17. C-Link
18. Caesar Rock
19. Get Started
20. Nothing For FreePlus 2 other Tedder tracks if #19 & #20 aren't those.

I've written tons about "Fuh You" on several other Macca and Fabs forums, and about his other two new ones, and peeps are going wild and a bit Macca Mad again over this new stuff of his attesting to his charisma, his fascinating back story, true appreciation of his talents, affection and fan love for him and there are even 800 pages on him at the Paul Mc. forum at Steve Hoffman's, it's gonna take some time to wade through that LOL. long story short I loved Fuh You upon first hearing and find it upbeat cheeky fun and sassy and jaunty and perky, not an enduring classic like Eleanor Rigby, Let It Be, Blackbird, etc., but a lot of fun. I admire Paul's colorful quirky art work for Egypt Station too, he's an arresting visual artist on top of all else
