"Out There" 2013 Setlist Critique and Suggestions

Even now, the first half is very post-beatle heavy while the last half is beatles heavy. It's what most people want to hear, and no one on here can deny that. You don't have to agree with that stance, but we all know that's how it is.

There's really only a few people here who constantly disagree about that. But he could do more than half Wings and Solo and those same people would still disagree with his song choices. : It's just so...disagreeable.

People keep complaining about the QUANTITY of Beatles songs vs Wings/solo.... But I'd like to point out that many of those Beatles songs, especially the early Beatles, are VERY short in length.... All My Loving is 2:08 Yesterday is 2:05 Blackbird is 2:18 Lady Madonna is 2:17 while Mrs. Vandebilt is 4:40 Band On the Run is 5:13 Let Me Roll It is 4:50 I'm just throwing out some examples... An interesting experiment would be to take the actual running length of a full show, and then compare the actual time devoted to Beatles, vs non-Beatles. When you do it that way, it may not be quite as Beatles skewed as you think... Anyone up to the task??

Not Me! (good idea though!)

I wonder how often a live version of a song can be clocked in with the same time.

Alright, I went through Youtube and got these as times. I may have made a mistake or two adding the times for the totals, but I don't think I did. 1. "Eight Days a Week" - 2:32 2. I'm posting this in the hope that Paul will consider doing a couple of tunes he wrote with Elvis Costello while on tour. Preferably "Shallow Grave" and "So Like Candy," but I wouldn't argue with "Pads, Paws n Claws," either.
-
I remain hopeful that Paul will add Bip Bop, Mary Had A Little Lamb, Carnival Of Light, the infamous 6-hour version of Spies Like Us, and the entire Family Way soundtrack to the setlist.

Elvis often performs some of these songs at his concerts; I've seen him do "So Like Candy" and of course "Veronica."

The best of the lot is "Tommy's Coming Home." Unreleased, but I would take any of the songs they wrote together. It was a leap in Paul's career, and a collaboration that was clearly generative.

Says who? McCartney and Costello didn't produce one single hit! You may like what they did together, but let's be honest nothing hit worthy was done.

"Hit worthy" is hardly a measure of what constitutes a good song. If that is your standard, then so be it, but I think that consensus is boring and a very problematic way of appreciating an artist's work. "Veronica", "My Brave Face", "That Day is Done" and "Don't Be Careless Love" are 1,000 times more interesting, substantial and intelligent songs than "Silly Love Songs" if you ask me. But hey, Billboard tell us SLS was better.
-
Not just Billboard, I say Silly Love Songs is better as well! Silly Love Songs is a masterfully crafted pop masterpiece with a fantastic vocal, excellent harmonies, blasting Philly style horns and an absolutely killer bassline! Please don't get me wrong, I like those songs, but people all over the world made Silly Love Songs a hit!

Beatles = 72:28 Wings = 32:22 Solo = 10:07
That breakdown of minutes per concert per era of Paul's music is pretty depressing. I hope that this isn't how he himself values his work, as I'd like to think he's more proud of his Wings and solo music than this breakdown of how much time he spends on each during a concert shows.

I thought the same. The Question is, when Paul listen or at least remember songs he wrote, whether this are primarily beatles songs or are all over his creative life. I listened to macca II archive collection and read the book last week. Asked about the song "on the way" he answered: I really hadn't heard that since I recored it. I'm not sure whether this is generalizable... But it seems that he remembers rather a fragment of his stuff, and forgot some jewels... No wonder by the big number of songs.

B J Conlee:
Enjoyed a lot of the dialogue here. I will always be a huge Macca fan whatever he plays. He's still # 1 in my book but I too wished he would play more of his Solo (Tug of War and beyond) material. I don't get upset over it because I realize he is playing to the "masses" and they come to his shows to hear Beatle songs and his Wings' era hits. It is a huge shame in my opinion because I think (like so many of us on this thread) so much of his solo stuff is criminally underrated. I just think that he could have had both...Beatles/Wings and Solo in his setlist and the casual fans would still walk away with even more respect. I can only imagine how great "Young Boy" would sound live. It is a great rocking song that would go down well in either a stadium or arena. I get his need to play his awesome Beatle songs (and Wings hits) but on each tour all he would have to do is play 4 or 5 songs from his various Solo albums like Tug of War, Flowers in the Dirt, Off the Ground, Flaming Pie, Chaos, Driving Rain etc. He's also got some great Wing songs from Back to the Egg that he hasn't played over the last 30 plus years. When he is playing 36 or so songs, therer is no reason he can't sprinkle in 5 songs from so many great choices. He has so many great p0p/rock songs from all eras that deserve to be heard. Songs like Ever Present Past, Put It There, This one, etc. would go down so well in my opinion. These are classic McCartney Pop. Hopefully, we may have at least a couple of Solo surprises when he hits the US portion of the tour but sadly I'm not counting on it. At least he did shake up the Setlist with new Beatle and Wings songs and I am looking forward to the Fenway show.
Well, you're damn right he shold add those 5 solo songs, becuase, like I said in my last post, BITUSSR, TLAWR, AML, Rigby & LMRI are overdone, in fact, they're like a routine, so the spots for the 5 songs would be free to get his own material into the set list. I invite to visit this thread, is only ficticious, but it's funny and makes you wonder what instrument he'd play in evry song: http://maccaboard.paulmccartney.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=79813

Excepting a few tributes, most everything he performs IS his work. He's proud of work from 1970-2013. And (much to the chagrin of many people here) he's proud of his work from 1963-1970 too. I think he just plays whatever he feels would be the best show possible, and that's the end of it. Whether the song is from 1967 or 1974 or 1982 or 2008, it is ALL PAUL MCCARTNEY MUSIC.
