Set List critique

"Somewhere back up on this thread someone felt Paul was making an excuse and wasn't being totally honest with saying he had nightmares about people walking out of a concert when he wasn't playing Beatles. Maybe so but I think he is suffering not only from lockdown but from the one-two Beatles punch of late last yesterday"
Pun intended (lol) "That Was Me" (great song that he should have played more than once live). Once again nobody is saying anymore that setlist should not be Beatle heavy. Just do a better job of mixing in some new solo songs to relpace older solo ones. Also, replace 2nd tier Beatle songs (In Spite Of All Danger & Benefit For Mr. Kite) with Beatle songs he never done before live. I made suggestions but not picky, there are still good ones to choose from and he could still sing them.
I agree. All that about him so being captivated in the aftermath of Get Back that I wrote was by way of trying to explain his probable mindset, not justifying it. I got to ask, whatever happened to the old-fashioned idea of promoting the new album during a tour that draws people who want to hear their old faves. Somewhere on here someone said the tour booklet had ads, info on McCartney III. He advertised and played songs off newer albums on past tours, especially 1989 tour with the fresh Flowers in the Dirt, first time I saw him.
Bottom line, Paulreally believes in "Carry That Weight"where the Beatles is concerned. Sad that many will have no clue of things like "Find My Way"
Have to say I am shocked and disappointed about the lack of songs from "McCartney III". Like you said promote the album and for the life of me I don't understand why they don't have the CD for sale at the concerts (correct me if I am wrong). I also saw him in 1989 and loved that he opened with (Figure Of Eight) from FITD and if my memory is correct he did six songs from that album in the show. I remember an interview of Paul during the 1989 tour and he said he opened up with "Figure Of Eight" because he wanted to be seen as a relevant artist and not one who totally lived in the past. Sadly Paul's mindset changed after that when he toured. I think it is sad also that many will have no clue of a song like "Find My Way" which I love. My question to you and others is do you think any of the first timers at his shows would even try to enjoy a song like "Find My Way" or would they just basically ignore it and wait for the next Beatle song.

My in-laws will be at that show, they live in Tampa. My sister in-law is big Beatle Paul fan and could care less about his solo albums even though I tried hard to "turn her on" to his solo music. I will get report from my brother in-law who is excellent photographer and I know will also post some you tube clips. I will send you email with some of his clips from the show.
Thanks Yankeefan. I've driven by "Camping World Stadium". For my wife and me, it is probably only a little over an hour away from our house in Florida.
As I said, if we were at home and not in NJ preparing our Condo for the Renters, I would have been tempted. But I'm sure the prices for 2 tickets would have been very high plus after following the setlists for all the shows on Got Back so far, I would have been furious not to hear live (and with the full Band) such great songs like "Find My Way", "Seize the Day", "Slidin", "I Don't Know" etc. It's not that some of the older Beatle and Solo songs on this Setlist are bad, but I wouldn't have been psyched to hear "Can't Buy Me Love", "Lady Madonna", " We Can Work it Out", "Let Me Roll It", "Let 'm In", "Helter Skelter" etc, again when I could have heard great "new" Solo songs that have never been done "live" in Concert before. What is Paul thinking? .
And don't get me started on some of the recent Solo Paul setlist choices that he continues to play like "Fuh You", and "Come On to Me" when he has far better songs from the same Egypt Station Album. One saving grace...I can always play them on my own CD's and it saved me plenty of money by not attending. Don't get me wrong,.. I would have loved to have heard them in concert but as others have said here...It's not going to happen in 2022. So sad and a real "missed opportunity" for Paul's Legacy. How does he not play "I Don't Know" or "Dominoes" two of his best songs ever...Beatles or Post Beatles". Sorry I'm frustrated and I'm repeating myself. Thanks Guys and Ladies for listening.
When I first heard "Happy With You it was love at first listen. Why play Fuh You rather than Happy, Dominoes, I Don't Know is a mystery. Didn't he write that one with some young guy who said something like we are going to write you a hit, I seem to recall from an interview? Ah, here is RyanTedder's name on the CD insert. I would love to hear the three we mentioned plus Despite Repeated Warnings with Hunt YouDown Nakd/ C-Link that wraps up the album. As what he did with Tedder, "Nothing For Free" is better than Fuh, imho.

I understand BJ and Paul's show in Winston Salem NC was about an hour drive for me but had no desire to go and I think as I mentioned surprised my wife. I needed a setlist that had 3-4 "McCartney III" songs on it and a couple of different ones from "Egypt Station" to have possible changed my mind. In addition to these changes if Paul had gotten rid of "In Spite Of All Danger" and "Benefit For Mr. Kite" and played two Beatle songs he never played live I might have actually been excited to go -lol , BTW - Glad I did not go in the end, heard the venue did not have enough parking and was a disaster. See link below. IMO he should have played in Charlotte where they have football stadium for Carolina Panthers and obviously enough parking -lol
'It was just horrible': Traffic headaches anger many Paul McCartney fans (msn.com)

Understand your frustration BJ and I agree. I will never understand a lot of Paul's choices when it comes to his setlist. For the most part, Beatle songs are a no brainer but as I have said multiple times why the heck pick songs like "In Spite Of All Danger" and "Benefit For Mr. Kite". While I did not like the songs he played from "Egypt Station" the last tour (exception being "Who Cares") I understood he was trying to promote his singles. That being said, why not change it up this tour and do other songs like the ones you have mentioned. It is mind blowing to me that there are now no songs from "McCartney III" in his set list. There are easily 3-4 songs from that album that would be great live. If he no longer wants to play songs from his most current album than I finally give up. You are correct that at least we have the CD's but it sure would have been cool to hear the "McCartney III" songs live with his touring band. Oh well, life goes on.

I had to laugh at Tedder saying he was going to write Paul a hit. There is no way in heck Paul would ever have a top single by himself, only way it happens if he does something with younger/hip artist. IMO "Fuh You" should have been released as "single" and left off the original album, could have been replaced with "In A Hurry" which was on another version of the album. The song does not fit with the others on "Egypt Station" Once again, this type of thing is why Paul needs good and strong willed producer like Nigel Godrich. CHAOS was such an excellent album because he would stand up to Paul and demand the best and song like "Fuh You" would never make it on an album produced by him.

Agree, plus he should never have caved and changed the title to Fuh You! Leave it as For You! I happen to like the song otherwise. And which one has the false ending, oh yeah - Come On To Me! He should have just ended the damn song and left off all that stupid "Yes I will, yes I will" etc.!

It's a shame that Nigel Goodrich didn't become his regular producer like George Martinwith the Beatles. Come to think of it, wasn't it Martin that recommended Goodrich?

I don't think Nigel and Paul hit it off that well but they created a fantastic album together. Paul has said he did not appreciate Nigel being pretty blunt with him at times. My gut feeling is Paul kind of wants "yes" man around him -lol.

I'd be pleased if he let Giles Martin do any future production of new music. He did a good job on the"NEW" album....the parts he produced... and is a good fit. He knows Paul's strengths and weaknesses. But, alas, it is all too late...pretty much. Paul could still come up with something speicial, I would guess, but time is not on his side.

As I recall reading, the producer of "Egypt Station" said when he suggested ideas to Paul during the sesssions, Paul would act as if he didn't hear any of it and would just continue with what he was doing. I would have walked out about then. I mean doesn't the guy produce Adele???? And how is it that Ryan Tedder just came along and did this or that? He wasn't hired to produce the album. I like "For Free." Good song, but the other one is embarrassing. The whole subject. If Ryan Tedder thought it was so great, why didn't he keep it and record it with his band....One Republic. I mean with his band he recorded a song for Tom Cruise and his Top Gun: Maverick movie. "Fuh You" might have fit there. Not!

Great points. The fact that Tedder didn't want it, similar to how Paul and Elvis Costello split the efforts of their work with Elvis turning Veronica into a hit, speaks loud and clear. Tedder didn't want that song, we don't want to hear it so it is an orphan. It needs to be relegated to a album that will never be released called "Unpure McCartney."

What is "For Free?" Did you mean "For You/Fuh You?" (Or the song "Nothing For Free?")

I remember reading one of the reviews on Egypt Station when it was first released. It was one of the main natonal papers. The reviewer on the whole loved the album but there was one track he hated which was "Fuh You". The writer told the story that when Macca first started working with Ryan Tedder they started working on a song primarily written by Tedder called "Fuh You". Paul's first instinct was that he didn't like the lyrics. He quickly thought that he is the person that wrote Eleanor Rigby and Blackbird and why would he do a song like "Fuh You". Tedder then asked Paul if he wanted a "hit". The writer of this review on Egypt Station said something to this effect "Too Bad that Paul didn't listen to his first instinct."
Now like 3 years later, we and Paul know that "Fuh You" never came close to a top 40 hit. So what recent solo song that Paul is still trotting out on this current tour...You guessed it "Fuh You." As much as Paul is a musical genius, he is not a good judge of his own music whiich is why he still puts inferior tracks on many of his original Post Beatles' albums and leaves off good songs that should have made the album.
I also remember Rob Sheffield, a great music critic on Rollingstone Magazine. Rob not only loved most of Egypt Station but the song he absolutedly loved was "Dominoes". He thought it was one of Paul's best songs ever...as a Beatle or Wings member. But the song that Rob didn't like was "Fuh You".
Finally, I remember when Egypt Station was just released. It was an online thing where the public was able to give iniitial reactions to "Fuh You". The overwhelming response was that it was terrible. The main reason it was negative was primarily because of the implied lyrics but because it sounded too much like a top 40 song with horrible lyrics.
Think about this song today that is on the setlist compared to what he could be playing. What would you rather hear...Fuh You or Little Willow or Put It There.

Can anyone put one or two of the Orlando reviews from last night's Concert. I saw a review from the Orlando Sentinel but couln't read it because the "paper" blocks it out. I am interested in an estimate of the crowd size and how Paul sounded. I saw the setlist and it was the one that didn't contain "Women and Wives". It still contained "let 'm in", "new" and "I've Just Seen a Face".
Again, just blows my mind...nothing from McCartney 3 and he's still doing "Come On to Me" and "Fuh You".
Thanks

See link below. Very generic review which does not say much but at least you can read it for free -lol
Everything we saw and heard at Paul McCartney's stadium show in Orlando (orlandoweekly.com)
My wife talked to my sister in-law briefly about the concert and she told me that she and my brother in-law had great time. She said his voice is aged/weathered but still sounds pretty good most songs especially when the band sings along with him.

I have a theory as to why Paul isn't playing the new songs from McCartney 3 and changing out songs from Egypt Station on this tour. Kestrel alluded to it a few posts back.
Kestrel mentioned that Paul doesn't want to do any more work that he has to do. I and a few others also mentioned that they were surprised that Paul/Band did so little rehearsing for this Got Back tour since it was his first tour in like 3 years. I think the reason for Paul and Band not shaking up the setlist is precisely because Paul wanted to do the least amount of rehearsing as possible. When I think about it, "Women and Wives" was the lone McCartney 3 song and it is the simplist McCartney 3 song to perform. It's just Paul at the piano and Rusty does the little guitar solo. The reason that he stuck with "Come On To Me" and "Fuh You" is because it required little to no rehearsing.
I remember how the "Stones" did their rehearsing when they started a new tour. Mick, Keith and the rest of the band would do a full month or rehearsing before the tour began. They especially wanted to be ready for bringing in new songs and for shaking up the Setlist. Why Paul doesn't want to be similar to the "Stones" in this regard still baffles me. Maybe because Paul is now close to 80. He is older and he wanted to shake up the setlist as little as possible. Paul still wants to give long shows to give the customers their "money's worth" but rehearsing new material is hard work. This is my best guess.
For the hard core fans who are probably the minority, this is the hardest thing to accept. We want to hear different and in many cases better songs. We also want a couple of different Beatle songs (e.g. Rocky Raccoon, I Want to Hold Your Hand) and that would require more rehearsing. From Paul's point of few, the majority of the audience (first timers and casual Beatle fans) they will be plenty satisfied. Again it requires little pre-tour rehearsing and he throws in a few new things like adding a couple of new Beatle songs that he hasn't played in like 20 years and he (primarily Peter Jackson) throws in the technology extras like Paul and John singing together for the initial encore track..."I Got a Feeling". Many of the casual fans have kept up with the "Let It Be" documentary with the Beatles over the last year so this is a great addition in Paul's mind.
This is my theory and it stinks for many hard core Paul fans like you and me on this site. Heck I was a little disappointed in the 2002 tour when Paul didn't add a few Solo songs from "Tug of War" and "Flaming PIe". This is a lot harded to accept for us because Paul has done virtually nothing from his last album and he is doing nothing new from Egypt Station.
Again only my theory but it does make sense imho.
Thanks

Paul's judgement has always not been very good with songs that make album and set list and this is classic example. Paul released "Fuh You" as single with what sounds like sexually explict lyrics which is not good look for man in his late 70's IMO "Who Cares" should have been the first single, good uptempo song and has great message about trying to help young people who are being "bullied". Paul could have set up interviews with local DJ's on the tour and talked about this songs message. I think he could have received more airplay with "Who Cares" than "Fuh You". Have the "B side be "I Don't Know" and I think you sell the "Egypt Station" album better with these two songs.
As for songs he could play on this tour instead of "Fuh You", the list is endless. You and others have mentioned much better "Egypt Station" songs which are much more Paul McCartney style than a song that is not his style with producer just trying to make crass hit with 70 year old artist. Think about Paul doing song like "That Was Me" or "Promise To You Girl" instead of "Fuh You". Paul just boggles my mind sometimes.

The one question I have is how hard is it for rock icon like Paul and his touring band of 20 plus years to learn something like "Find My Way" from "McCartney III". Obviously Paul knows the song quite well since he played every instrument on it in stages (lol) so would it really be a struggle for this band to learn it in a couple of hours. Are we to believe that Paul's band has never heard songs like "Find My Way" from "McCartney III" ? -lol

Very simple, Paul does not care about the minority at his concerts, all they do is buy his solo albums the last 40 years -lol

Thanks for the Orlando review. It gave me a good feel for how the show went down.
Glad your relatives had a good time. That being said, I think we're both glad we didn't pay this kind of money for this Paul McCartney show. Even though he has a great band, I would have been mad with some of the songs he did play and even ,more mad with the songs he didn't play. You are so right...he forgets about the true fans that have paid for his Solo Albums for so many years.
