Set List critique

Paul's new song from the Destiny videogame is brilliant. I would really like to hear it live.

This is purely my personal experience, but I might be able to provide something of an "outsider" perspective to this conversation. I have been a life long Beatles fan, but knew VERY little about Paul's solo material (I could have named a grand total of three songs, Maybe I'm Amazed, Live and Let Die and My Brave Face). I first got the chance to see Paul at last year's Outsidelands festival in SF and I knew nothing about his set-lists at all, but to be honest I was really hoping to hear as many Beatles songs as possible. I had nothing at all against his solo work, but my perspective was "this is my first and maybe only chance I will ever have to see one of the Beatles in concert, so I hope I hear some classic Beatles songs". After seeing the concert, I loved the set-list. Since that time I have gotten into Paul's solo/Wings work (I wish I had done so sooner, I love it). I completely understand why Paul fans want to hear a wider variety of his work, and when I got to see him again this year I was a little surprised at how similar the set-list was. But as a random Beatles fan/member of the general public attending my first show, I was definitely hoping to hear Beatles songs.
Thanks, very nice post! Glad you found your way into Paul's solo work, too.

I'm really enjoying the song as well. If the game does well and he gets recognition, then we just might! But, I doubt it....

First, I think it's great that you were even remotely aware of "My Brave Face"! Also, I can see how first-timers would want as many Beatles songs as possible, but I think you get the point that -- for the second-timers (and beyond) -- his setlist can be a bit of a letdown. But if you're gonna take the big risk of getting more into his Wings/solo stuff, prepare to be downright disappointed if you plan on going to more shows. With that said: You MUST get Flaming Pie*, Electric Arguments, Memory Almost Full, London Town and Wings Over America, for starters. *=in Paul's defense, several songs from this album have been performed live.

Yeah, basically as a first timer I mostly wanted Beatles, and since discovering the quality of Paul's albums, I have pretty quickly switched to where I would want a variety. I'm starting to work my way through his albums, so far I have Memory Almost Full, Flowers in the Dirt, and Band on the Run. I've heard a couple of songs off of New that I liked a lot, and I was really surprised that they weren't selling the album at the concert. I went there intending to buy it. Thanks for the recommendations.

I've been talking to several fans who are planning to go to his rumored shows in november (they have never been to one of his concerts), and his current setlist would certainly make them very happy.

and on the other hand many that already heard the mostly same setlist at previous concerts may still go but may have preferred & may have even been thrilled to hear some songs from the last 30 years.

I think that culture is more about "OMG! I'm seeing a Beatle!" than appreciating the overall works of Paul McCartney.

unfortunately listened during last day's a lot fireman and macca II stuff. Thru "rediscovery" of some songs I thought how strange it is, that the same creative guy, who has such an enormously output (from Yesterday/Wanderlust via Letting Go, to Temporary Secretary, Lifelong Passion or Appreciate ) performs year after year nearly the same setlistcore. It's like to hide/deny a part of himself... Is it really only the alleged reactions of songs like All my loving, Blackbird or Let me roll it instead of never recognized or forgotten juwels like Monkberry Moon Deleight, Take it away, Put it there or Ever Present Past that could also sucessfully like (1985 or Mrs. Vandebilt)...? I got more and more the impression that Paul mainly want to correspond as entertainer than as a living rock'n roll legend with "rough and edges" ...
-
Not really a critique but I currently can't get Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey out of my head. It just keeps recycling over and over and over.....Like an old vinyl record that keeps skipping... Last time I had this feeling was for Come and Get It 4 years ago.... Could this be a omen for the next leg Out There? See you in Nashville!

It's time for Paul to perform a new set list, his concerts are starting to sound stale. Maybe add a few Beatles songs that he's never performed like Martha my dear, Maxwells Silver Hammer, Honey Pie, When I'm 64, What you're doing, Hold me tight etc. He could also do a few songs that were written for others like World without love, Woman, that means a lot, step inside love and goodbye. Why not add some Wings songs that he hasn't performed like When the night, Little lamb dragonfly, Mamunia, With a little luck, Heart of the country, Monkberry moon delight and Smile away and some solo stuff like Junk, Waterfalls and Man we was lonely. He could still do some songs that he always performs like Yesterday, Band on the run, Let it be etc, It just showcases his amazing repetoir. He needs to do this to make his concerts more interesting and to add a new lease of life to them.
-
I think he does a good job of mixing things up. I compared his 2010 set list with his current on, and over half of it is different. Having said that, he does ignore his post 1980 material to a criminal level. I mean, play THREE or FIVE songs from the most recent 25 years! Alas, if he chooses not to, that is his right.

Fully a third of his current setlist is different than 2010. The Out There tour has something for everyone. He'll change it again next year, probably. But whatever he does, I'll still love it! I saw him twice this summer, there was nothing stale about it!
-
I hope he'll choose a few "rockabilly" tinged songs for Greensboro. Southerners really dig rockabilly But I'm with Randy up there--whatever, it's gonna be brilliant
-
Now that a year has past since the release of NEW, I am surprised more of the CD wasn't played on the OUT THERE tour, given that the band rehearsed the whole CD. It would have been pretty ballsy to play 12 NEW songs in a set list of 38 songs.

Wilco is doing 6 shows at the same venue & every night is a different setlist. I can't even imagibe Paul ever doing something like that.

What's so strange is he COULD with this band, being it is the one he has been with the longest. He could just review every set list from the past 12 years, and have all those songs in rotation, including from CDs like Driving Rain, Chaos, MAF, etc. and REALLY mix things up. EVERY once in a while, he does something like call out a tune on stage. But it is much too rare. I think it would be EASY for him to even say "I'm changing things up right now because I want to play Twenty Flight Rock!" And do it. Every night, with the band not even knowing what song it will be. These guys can play Fine Line if they have to.

I've always said that. Especially when he is doing 2 nights in a row in the same city. Bill it as such. Let everyone know it will be 2 diff shows. Heck...most of us would be there for both shows!

Yes, exactly. In fact, he could keep the staples (Yesterday, Hey Jude, Let It Be, Live And Let Die) but have the rest of the show be completely different. Every night. Of course, there would be some duplication, but so what? It would keep things fresh and spontaneous. Open one night with Honey Don't, then the next with It's So Easy, then another night with Hello Goodbye, then shock us the next night with Venus and Mars/Rock Show. How difficult could this be? Play things like You Won't See Me and Come And Get it in place of Another Day and 1985. MIX IT UP!!!

The Beatles rarely ever added a song or did an encore, and they never changed the setlist during a tour. Most other touring bands don't either, even playing a two night stand or more they may only change a song or two. But Paul is touring now behind the 50th Anniversary of The Beatles. It's been a bit of a big deal here in the States. The current setlist goes down pretty well. No reason to change it!
