I agree with the majority of the people posting here. I am also disappointed that there aren't more changes in the setlist, but at this point, it's just not going to happen. At 80, it's not that Paul can't do it, but I have learned that he won't do it. This is his pattern, it's not changing now. Where I seem to differ with a lot of people is on the newer albums. I own the CD's and I have listened to them. They are good, but they aren't the music that Paul will be remembered for by most people. I don't really care to hear them live in concert. I would love to hear more from the 80's and 90's though. I am a long-time, die-hard fan. I will be seeing Paul for the 30th time this tour. I fear it may be the last. I selfishly want him to end on a high note, while he's still thrilling the fans! I don't want to see him falter.
Good thoughts. I, too, am a long time fan, having bought every album when it came out, starting with McCartney in 1970 when I was in my early teens. Course I remember the The Beatles what with older brothers in the house. First saw him live in 1989 and didn't mind him leading off with Figure of Eight and working in five more songs from Flowers. I had fully expected at least four new numbers from McCartney III. On this site, he talked about having nightmares that the audience would be upset if not presented with old favorites and walk out! Hence, we are down to the playing of Women and Wives but not for every concert. I think the isolation of the pandemic has affected his self-confidence just as it as many people. That said, it is his concert, his music and his decision and after I couldn't see him in 2019 due to a serious illness, I can't really complain. Glad he is alive and well enough to tour and wants to do so. Thanful that's I am as well and hope to be there a week from tonight for the Knoxville show.
PS..Have quit following set list reports in last week so maybe I will be surprised. Also avoiding all YouTube concert videos till after Knoxville. Enjoy!
Hey John Mackintosh...Glad you are feeling better from your 2019 Illness and that you are going to see the Knoxville show. I also think it is a good plan for you to avoid whenever possible seeing youtube clips from these current "Got Back" shows as well as the setlist discussions in preparation for your Knoxville show. That way you will be surprised when you do attend.
You also bring up a good point that the reason for the lack of McCartney 3 songs just might be a lack of self-confidence due to the isolation ot not being on tour for so long. You don't think that Paul would ever have a lack of self-confidence due to his tremendous talent but he is human and it happens to everybody. We don't know if anyone from his " Band" brings up setlist choices to their "boss" but it probably might be a touchy/sensitive subject for them to press their leader.
Yankeefan and others from this board have brought up his "nightmare" scenario before. I agree with others that Paul should never think those kinds of thoughts. I remember attending a Neil Young concert in Philadelphia years ago and the entire first half of the Show Neil Young just played new songs from his latest album. You could tell that fans were getting frustrated that Mr. Young wasn't playhing his hits/signature songs but they were patient and went nuts when the big/known songs finally came out. Paul should never think that fans would walk out. They have far too much respect for a Beatle who has given them such a catalog of music for many years. Besides most of us here don't think that Paul's shows shouldn't be Beatle heavy. We just want more variety of the Post Beatle songs he does play.
Anyway, good points John and I'll be thinking of you when reviews come out for the Knoxville show.
Thanks, BJ, appreciate your good wishes. Wish you and I and some other hard-core fans on here could have about 15 minutes with Paul and make the argument for Egypt Station/McCartney III. I was convinced we would hear Find My Way, Lavatory Lille, Slidin', and Seize the Day. Never thought it would be only Women and Wives and then not on a regular basis. Of course, I was shocked in 2015 when he trotted out Temporary Secretary. I remember him repeatedly saying he and Lennon never had a formula for writing songs. For awhile he had a formula for doing between four to six new songs on the tours I saw in 1989/1990, 1993, 2002, 2005, 2009 ( different in that two fromMemory Almost Full, two from Electric Arguments as both those albums were very recent) about the same in 2010,2011. Then songs from New in those mid-teen years afterwards. Well, this year he has torn up the formula so looking forward to Knoxville. Hard to believe he is just weeks away from 80. Surely, the youngest 80 ever.
