I really liked that too...makes me want to hear the whole album so much more now !!!
i love both songs equally. “Come On To Me” reminds me of “I Can Bet” also. I thought that song could have been promoted more at the time, as it was just as catchy!
One thing I really love is that Paul has put one of his great paintings on an album cover!!! I love his artwork so much and the videos for these songs are also fantastic in they’re featuring Paul’s artwork again. I have to say that I’m so proud of Paul doing that. He is a very talented artist and quite modest about it too!!! Kudos to Paul on the latest songs! Can’t wait for the next songs
I was thinking the same thing on all of your great points, L2T. COTM sounds a lot like "I Can Bet," mostly at the beginning of the song. It's all right to imitate yourself, I suppose (smile).
I was just watching “The McCartney Years” videos and when “Hi Hi Hi” came on, I thought that COTM is the raciest thing he’s written since that song!

Paul's vocals sound rich, warm and comforting (despite the ambiguous, mysterious lyrics) on "I Don't Know" (which reminds me a bit of "Your Eternal Flame" the piano sound) and have much of that same quality plus an impetuous, playful sassiness on "Come On To Me" and each have played in my mind some since hearing them, they're catchy and interesting. Paul seldom passes up the chance to make us girl fans jealous--the lyrics, you know (wink, wink). "Thanks a bunch." Just kidding, I fancy these and eagerly anticipate his new album !

Your are right but "Hi Hi Hi" is very sexually explicit while "Come On To Me" is just flirting - lol.

Paul McCartney’s Producer Greg Kurstin Breaks Down ‘Egypt Station’

Damn good bits of info on “EGYPT STATION” from Kurstin.....

Kirstin made it almost sound as if Paul produced the album and he was there primarily to make suggestions here and there and be in awe! Kidding. I am intrigued by him saying that there are 20+ songs from the sessions. The album will contain 16. I wish he had been asked how they narrowed them down....which ones to leave off the album. Quite often over the years, songs left off various Paul albums were, to me, better than some that made the cut. He recorded this album when on breaks from touring. I wish he had just done less touring and given his voice some rest....for longer periods and more often....and maybe he wouldn't sound so hoarse. "I Don't Know" is a beautiful song...strong melody. Paul's vocal is just....not quite there. Maybe if he had started off the song with vocal harmonies that emerge later in the song, instead of just his voice, it would have made a big difference....to me. The two pianos intro is spectacular...but then the vocal starts off very shaky.

Sorry for my english is the first thing i had to say and then....i came here just to say how much happy i am with the 2 songs!even when Paul came with "My brave face" in 1989 i was dissapointed! In all these years only "the world tonight" makes me so happy in hearing singles from Macca new albums..."From a lover to a friend" was the worst, boring and horrible! I don´t like Heather but the best songs from a single point of view are "Your loving flame"( that a really great ballad) and "Freedom" and because some people dislike the lyrics don´t like "Freedom" but they like "Give peace a chance" "Freedom" is better musically! i love the instrumental "Heather" too!"New" (the song) was great but in that time and today my fave is "Everybody out there" and i still hearing it every day and "I can bet" next and then "New".From Flowers until today my fave is "How many people"! i already pre order the album and buy the two songs from itunes... long live to Macca!

Loved the article but I would like to make a couple of points. First, notice the initial reaction McCartney had to Kurstin's suggestions. He seems to dismiss them and makes you wonder why he even bothers having a producer. Like you, I worry about his song selection because we both know he has left some real good songs off albums. I have said this many times before this is why I thought Nigel Godrich was so good, he basically was not afraid/in awe of McCartney and the results show in CHAOS. I like that this album is going to be very diverse in sound, I hope it is strong lyrically also which can be a problem sometimes. I totally agree with you, wish he would stop all the touring and saved his voice for his new album. It would be such a shame to ruin good songs with subpar vocals.

My initial reaction to the 2 new songs:
1). 'I Don't Know' reminded me instantly of one of Paul's ballads from Driving Rain - in particular 'Your Loving Flame'. Very similar chord changes & "feel".
2). The piano intro to 'I Don't Know' sounds very similar to John's demo 'Now & Then'. So similar that maybe Paul did it deliberately as a tribute of sorts. 'Now & Then' was supposed to be the 3rd John demo the Threetles were supposed to finish up, but George didnt like the song. Paul, in a YouTube interview, said he liked the song & wanted to work on it. So, it makes sense.
3). 'Come on to Me' reminded me of 'Dance Tonite'. Very catchy. I love the Wings "tribute" in the middle of the song - sounded like a bit of"Live & Let Die". Great song!
Paul needs another big hit! It's been too long since his last Top 5 hit - FourFiveSeconds.

I thought so too only COTM seemed a bit more sophisticated coming from a man matured on the subject.
I like what a coworker said when I played it for him with the lyrics to make sure he caught them. "That is both cool and creepy at the same time"

It seems on the various internet groups I'm on in FB that are devoted to Paul and discussing the two new songs, reactions seemed mixed from those who love it to those who are saying, "meh" (No one seems to hate it btw. Just some aren't as enthused)
The ones who like it seem to be repeatedly telling those that aren't that impressed that we should be grateful that Paul is still making music after all this time and at his age and have new stuff.
My opinion? I find both songs to be what I call Classic Paul Style . I like them for that reason. He took two different styles that both worked for him in the past and used it again and it works. Sure, do such a thing way too much and it gets boring but it's been a few years now since we've had new Paul stuff so to me, the timing is right too

I listen to the online Beatles radio show "Things We Said Today" every week, and on the latest broadcast, it was interesting to hear the commentators thoughts and insights on the two new songs and the latest news with the new album.

Steve Marinucci:"I Don't Know" is a somber ballad and if you listen to the words... well. you can either take them two ways, you kinda can brush them off and think they don't mean anything, or you can take them a little seriously and think Paul is like-- spilling his guts, umm... and I honestly don't know. Uh--I mean it really.. to listen to those words, it kind of makes you think a lot. I mean I like-- I like the song, I do like the song, umm... but those words... I don't know... it's-- maybe I'm taking it too seriously, I mean.. you know... did I take Yesterday too seriously? No, you know, so-- but it is interesting that or the way the lyrics go on that, so.. but I like the melody... I mean-- I think it's a good song."

Allan Kozinn:
Yeah, I kind of like that one ["I Don't Know"] better of the two and to me it's a little bit sort of son of Beautiful Night musically, umm... and but-- you know, I think there's a lot going on in the music of that one much more than is going on in the other and one thing that struck me on the first listen was the sort of subtlety of Paul's piano playing. It's something that, umm.. you know, I mean he's never been a bad pianist or anything it's just that--and this wasn't like you know virtuoso all over the place piano but there was a lot of gradation of volume and tone and different things and I-- it's a small thing but I found that kind of impressive you know, just to hear the way he was shaping the sound there. But yeah, I think that's-- I think it's a pretty nice song and-- you know, if there's-- if there's more of that on the album, I mean-- I guess we'll see, we have no idea what the rest is gonna be. -
So do I get like 13 copys of this new album from all the shows I went to see during the last tour? Has any mention of that been made yet? I know that I filled out the forms each time.

Yes, it did seem Paul, just to be contrary...or out of resentment..., seemed to dismiss Kurstin's suggestions out of hand before finally acknowledging them. Kursitn seemed okay with it because Paul is, after all,.......a Beatle! Finishing it all at Abbey Road only made him seem even more intimidated by Paul. What bothers me about Paul's approach....time wise....is that the vocals will not be up to par because he hasn't given sufficient time for his voice to recover from all the touring. He could do that in his Beatle days, not now. It has been 5 years since his last studio release, so, in all likelihood...and to be realistic...., this will proabably be his final studio release. I would have imagined that he would have given the allbum his highest priority...in every way; to really make a great one. It will be around forever. The tour stops here and there while he was recording it will be long forgotten. I hope I'm wrong, but the first two songs don't make me very optimistic that, vocal-wise, it will be an album we treasure.

Oh I think Paul always gives 200% to every recording... I don't think he takes a casual approach to it at all, or an attitude of "Well, I'll just sing this song and get it recorded and won't worry about how it sounds." He is a dedicated creative artist and musician, and I feel he wants to release the best product possible, and does work hard at making it the best. I think he has an idea in his mind of how he wants something to sound, and tries to replicate that, it's a creative genius at work, like I'm sure Mozart or Bach or Vivaldi heard in their minds also, before it was recorded on paper.
I've had vocal training myself, and understand that as we age our voices can't sound the same as when we were in our 20s.. but I think Paul sounds pretty damn good for someone his age. I think he is (rightly so) a perfectionist and always tries to give his best, and I'm sure it means alot to him to be able to keep singing and performing his music for us. I'm sure it means alot to him that he has fans (including myself!) that will always be supportive of that!

I especially fancy his piano-based songs...one of my favorite styles of his...like "I Don't Know," "Your Loving Flame," "The Long and Winding Road," "Let It Be," some on "Chaos and Creation in the Back Yard," The "hidden" song on "New," etc. They really get to me. Drives me a bit mad wondering what he's saying, singing about in "I Don't Know..." wondering what the lyrics mean--'cause "I don't know" LOL what they mean. I've imagined some kind of wild scenarios which I doubt are true, such as ...well, I guess I'd better not say !
