      JoeySmith:

The 1st single off their last album (title track) was significantly remixed by George Martin from the album version (Phil Spector). If Paul and George hated TLAWD album version so much, why didnt Paul have George do the same to this single as well?

Actually, its the other way around! Paul loved the original George Martin album version of "The Long And Winding Road" because it was only the four Beatles performing on that song. When Phil Spector took over, he would add the orchestra sound to "The Long And Winding Road" which would anger Paul. In reality, Phil Spector would change the sound of the entire "GET BACK" album and change the album to "LET IT BE." I truly believe that another fellow Beatles fanatic can help answer this question.

From wikipedia (entry has been updated to include Giles Martin's recent comments) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carnival_of_Light

"Carnival of Light" is an unreleased experimental piece recorded by the Beatles on 5 January 1967 for "The Million Volt Light and Sound Rave", an event held at the Roundhouse Theatre on 28 January and 4 February 1967. The track is nearly 14 minutes long and contains distorted sounds of percussion, keyboards, guitar, vocals, and various effects. The piece has not yet appeared on any official Beatles release. In 1996, McCartney tried to release the track on the compilation album The Beatles Anthology 2, but George Harrison voted to reject it. The track was confirmed by McCartney to be in his possession in 2008, but his attempt to release it to the public has been unsuccessful. As of 2016, he was still considering the track's release. Recording and mix Beatles expert Mark Lewisohn, who listened to the song in 1987 while compiling his book The Complete Beatles Recording Sessions, says the song included "distorted, hypnotic drum and organ sounds, a distorted lead guitar, the sound of a church organ, various effects (water gargling was one) and, perhaps most intimidating of all, John Lennon and McCartney screaming dementedly and bawling aloud random phrases like 'Are you alright?' and 'Barcelona!'" McCartney biographer Barry Miles wrote in Paul McCartney: Many Years from Now that the song had "no rhythm, although a beat is sometimes established for a few bars by the percussion or a rhythmic pounding piano. There is no melody, although snatches of a tune sometimes threaten to break through." ...Also, according to Barry Miles, musically it "resembles 'The Return of the Son of Monster Magnet' from Frank Zappa's Freak Out! album, except there is no rhythm and the music ... is more fragmented, abstract and serious."

Link to "Return of the Son of Monster Magnet" - that Carnival of Light is supposed to sound similar to

sounds like John Lennon screaming at 00:22 Imagine what Carnival of Light must have sounded like though, when it was first heard, with those kind of sounds, and a light show going on at the same time... must have been the ultimate psychedelic experience... More from Wikipedia link above:

In November 2008, McCartney confirmed he still owned the master tapes, adding that he suspected "the time has come for it to get its moment. I like it because it's the Beatles free, going off-piste." McCartney would need the consent of Lennon's widow, Yoko Ono, and George Harrison's widow, Olivia Harrison, as well as Ringo Starr to release the track. In 2016, McCartney stated in an interview with Rolling Stone he was toying with the idea of releasing unused Beatles' recording takes. During this interview he again admitted he was still toying with the idea of releasing Carnival of Light. As of 2017, the track remains unreleased. Many anticipated it to be included as a bonus track for the upcoming super deluxe edition of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, but it failed to appear in the released track listings. At a preview event hosted at Abbey Road Studios to unveil the new Pepper stereo remix, Giles Martin commented that while it was considered at one point for inclusion, "it wasn't really part of Pepper. It wasn't part of the Sgt. Pepper recording. It's a very different thing". However, he expressed an interest in "do[ing] something interesting" with the track in the future.

Hmmm...interesting. I've always thought that the "Let It Be" guitar solo is beautifully done and full of heart. To each his own. There's certainly a lack of long solos from George both in the Beatles and as a solo artist. I don't think that John and Paul were into writing songs with long solos, and I guess this affected the development of George's style.

Exactly. They went for preciseness..to the point. As such, George always delivered just what the song needed. The shimmering guitar on "It's Only Love" the sitar on "Norwegian Wood"....which in many ways makes the song....and the perfect slide guitar on "Nowhere Man" sums up the perfect George contributions. It wasn't easy pleasing John and Paul who had very precise ideas on how they wanted for their songs to sound. And since Paul, essentially, could play any instrument, it was easy to deliver just what he wanted without asking George. George's gorgeous guitar solo on "Something" shows just how flawless he could be. That song perfectly sums up his style and gift for melody. He knew what the songs needed. Ringo wasn't flashy ala' Keith Moon, but was perfect for the Beatles. Same goes for George. His guitar solo on his "Isn't It A Pity" is quite long.

I think Blue Jay Way and It's All Too Much should both have been included in Magical Mystery Tour. It's All Too Much would have been a perfect song to play in MMT while Paul and Miss Wendy (The Tour Guide) were walking in a field or something, lol. It fit part of the story.

IMO, Brian deserves at least some of the blame with regards to the disastrous L&M's publishing rights & Northern songs. They trusted him & he ended up finding **** Lester, who structured a 50% share for Lester, 40% (split between L&M), and 10% Brian. What a horrible deal for L&M & it would get worse as Lester sold his shares behind L&M's back.

      Boggles the mind, doesn't it?

read some where Northern songs had 50% in Harrisongs so when George wrote a song he was still tied in in around about way to Lennon - McCartney

In the book "Beatles '66", it also mentions Paul stormed out of the session. It also says that in January 1969, when John accused Paul of taking over the "Let It Be" project, John said (in the film) that the only way to record something to his satisfaction was to do it alone. He then said to Paul, "The only regret I have about past numbers is because I've allowed you to take it somewhere I didn't want it to go. Then my only chance was to let George take over because I knew he'd take it. Like on "She Said She Said."

'Experimental' isn't defined by the results, but by the approach taken to create them. It's the only time he's created a whole album in this cut-and-shut way to such success: Travelling Light is nothing like his other output, for example.

Yes. Using the same logic I conclude that Bermuda Triangle is nothing like Barry Manilow's other output.

I bow to a person who must be right.

I just listened to the remix of FAAB. Still does nothing for me. Comes across as a slow dirge. Why did they mess with George's vocals? They should have had Ringo do something more interesting with the percussion.

I think you would like the remix of Real Love better then. The next remix opens up the song even more than FAAB.

No, UK versions were not available here in the '60's. I knew there were differences, because I would read all the teen magazines and I would read about The Beatles first UK album called Please Please Me and second UK album was called With The Beatles. The first US album was Meet the Beatles (if you don't count the VeeJay release of Introducing the Beatles. then Capitol came out with The Beatles Second Album. (I was 13 in '64)

I think Ebony and Ivory is the last song he wrote that most people recognize. That said, my mom, who barely knows Paul outside of the Beatles remembers hearing songs like Figure of Eight on the radio and liking it. I guess it all depends on where you live.

I bought the DVD-Audio version. I've got the player for it and yes, I Love the redbook lossless sound. There aren't many sources for discreet surround Beatles as yet. I do prefer the original Day in the Life stereo mix with the vocals panning like sunrise and sunset. And I tend to play it through my Dolby Pro Logic setting for 5.1 surround. That will change if and when Blu-Ray Audio is available. But I Hope the panning stays in that track. I Love the stereo/surround remixes of The Ed Sullivan Show/I Want to Hold Your Hand. Great Job! And Walrus is Monsterous. But...Yesterday is Not a Demo version. Love uses an extended intro, however, the song is Complete. It is a remix to curb the vocal panning to front center-only. But that is likely for theatrical purposes; to prevent drop-outs in the much-larger sound field of a theater.

I think he's too busy. I also think he would really not give away secrets about the process. His best work as with any artist is pure clear inspiration. His gift as he calls it. No one can match Paulie's gift for melody.
