Set List critique

Okay, here is my two cents on this topic.
I like his rule about playing his "Greatest Hits"because there will be members of the audience who have never seen him before and they wanna hear them. If I was one of those fans, I would be thrilled to see him and playing his big hits would be a dream come true for me. Ya know what? The first time I ever saw him was in May 2002. He played those greatest hits and it was a dream come true for me.
I have seen Paul 5 times now. The concerts were all nearly identical with a few songs changed up in the set list. I am a very blessed person to have seen him 5 times. As a first Generation Beatles fan, I could think of a gazillion songs that I would love to see Paul play in concert. But, ya know, it doesn't matter to me. As I say, play whatever ya want Paulie and thanks very much love.

I have beaten this topic to death (lol) but will quickly respond to your "two cents". Even the people like myself that want more solo songs in his setlist have no problem with him playing the hits. Fine, do the 20-25 Beatle/Wings songs that the majority of the crowd wants to hear. Just change up the remaining 10-12 songs in his setlist with solo songs he has never or rarely done before (exp. That Was Me, Promise To You Girl, Little Willow etc) to please the people who support him by buying his solo albums.

So...any guesses on what may turn up in the setlist of intrigue this time around? Not looking to generate the same old crap about how nothing changes...just wondering what songs we suspect could get trotted out that haven't been ever or lately!
I could see "Find My Way" joining the set in the opening electric portion. Maybe "Seize The Day" in the magic piano set midway through the show. I know it's not "new" but I suspect "Love Me Do" will purposefully stick around to make mention of the 60th Anniversary of The Beatles. It's also well past time for a new show opener. He has a habit for the past decade or so, of dusting off primarily Lennon-based lead vocal early Beatle tracks (as if to put his stamp back on them?) as the opener...perhaps we'll finally get "I Want To Hold Your Hand" and/or "She Loves You"? I suppose "Get Back" could also make a fitting opener, but it's a tough one to start on, vocally speaking.

I suppose there is a shot at Slidin.
-
2 Egypt Station Songs, 2 Macca3 songs, 1 NEW song, then the basic setlist. While there is great anticipation for this tour, we will ultimately be let down with the setlist and vocals. Its been like this for years. Remember the Freshen Up tour?? Same setlist and nothing freshened up.
I mentioned in another thread...he needs to shorten the show, ditch the 15 song soundcheck, and play what suits his voice.
For him to play Metlife and Sofi stadiums at this stage is insane. His voice won't make it.

Wix, I don't know if your Private Message notification is working, so thought I'd tell you I sent you a PM.
P.S. Would LOVE to hear IWTHYH or She Loves You as an opener!

Hey WixRocks...Good suggestions for the new "Got Back Setlist". I was thinking about "Get Back" as the Concert Opener especially with all the hype about the "Get Back Film. And it would be a true "Paul" song.
And I would love for "I Want to Hold Your Hand" and "She Loves You" to finally make a Paul Setlist. I guess the reason Paul was reluctant in the past was because he felt that he alone couldn't duplicate that early Beatles' sound. But now after all these years it would be fun for Paul to do it. I think between Abe and Rusty (with a little help from Wix and Brian) and Paul they might be able to do a credible job.
I would love "Find My Way" and "Seize the Day" being new inclusions.
And as possible concert encores I would vote for "Slidin" and "Hunt You Down/Naked (Egypt Station). They could be awesome imo.
Finally, a couple of more great Egypt Station tracks that didn't make it on the last tour. They would be "I Don't Know", "Dominoes" and "Happy With You".
As far as "new songs to the Setlist", I would be an extremely happy camper. And that would really "shake" up the Setlist imo.

I would be shocked if "Find My Way" was not included especially since he got Grammy award nomination for that song. It is a great song and IMO should be the opening song in the concert ( in my dreams lol). I could see "Slidin" being included because it "rocks" and IMO would be great replacement for "Let Me Roll It" which has been played to death. As for piano song, I think the selection might be "Women And Wives" from "McCartney III". All of these songs would be a great fit as they were recorded with Paul's current voice so hearing him sing it live would not be that different. If he was going to dust off old Beatle song, how about one from "Let It Be" that she shared vocals with John and open with "One After 909". The rest of the band can share the vocals with him or maybe just Abe.
Ok, those are my ideas. Guess we will see what happens -lol.

BJ, my gut feeling is "Egypt Station" songs will be ignored and any new songs will come from "McCartney III". See my earlier post for what I expect and or hope for with setlist for 2022 tour.

I don't think there is anything wrong with hearing the same songs again in a set list but I agree, I would love to hear new songs, especially from the latest album. I also wouldn't mind hearing more Wings songs & less often played Beatles tunes, since this is probably going to be his last U.S. tour. I am a little surprised he is even doing this tour. Like many others have mentioned, his voice is not up to his usual standard but it's not up to us to make that decision & he is just fulfilling a promise that he made to his fans to come back 'one more time'! I won't be seeing this concert but I was spoiled in 2002, as I had front row seats at his San Jose, CA concert & I can't top that performance - especially after Paul & I exchanged peace signs during the show! For those who have never seen him or his band, I highly recommend going to it - you won't be disappointed, Paul puts on an excellent show!

Agree with you on possible "Egypt Station" additions. I'm still ticked that he did "Fuh You" and "Come On To Me" instead of "I Don't Know", "Happy With You" and "Dominoes. Typical Paul...he went with the songs that the record company wanted pushed.

"Happy With You" and "Dominoes" would have been nice additions to the acoustic part of his show. "I Don't Know" would have fit in nicely with the piano songs he does in his setlist. I really did not like "Fuh You" and "Come On To Me" but others loved them and said they came across well live. (to each their own). "Come On To Me" was just too darn repetitive the last minute of the song and the issue over did Paul say the "F" word on "Fuh You" was not a good look for somebody in their 70's IMO. I believe both songs were singles so of course the music company pushed them.

Historically, McCartney tends to forget about a solo album for his setlist unless it is his most current album. That is why I think any new solo songs will all be from "McCartney III". My guess is he will do three songs from it and the only one I am pretty positive he will do is "Find My Way". The soundcheck is a huge money maker so he probably will still do it, I agree he should quit doing them. Be like most other performers, do quick couple of songs with any instrument you may play during the show and be done with it. At his age and the state of his voice, IMO he should cut his show to 90 minutes with one quick encore.

This would and could be Paul's chance to make lots of changes and have this be the freshest tour after being away from touring (not by his own choice)
but..,
the odds are good that he won't... he doesn't want to have too many chances that people will do a concession run (I don't know how they can as I do not want to miss anything if at all possible).
I am always glad to see him in concert and have to admit from the past concerts - I have always liked that new song ( can still be an oldie, but it is new to the list)
Hopefully his voice does well ...
I hope I am way wrong and he really surprises everyone and mixes it up like crazy ha ha ... I am glad to hear that he got back.

I don't see "Women and Wives" holding up in a Stadium show. We joke about it, Paul jokes about it, but that will truly cause a mass exodus to bathrooms and concessions. I don't think we've heard the last of "Egypt Station" tracks, though maybe less of them. In 2019, Paul was still playing assortments of "New", "Queenie Eye", and even "Dance Tonight"! I suspect "Come on To Me" will likely stick around. I'd like to hear "Who Cares", never really cared for "Fuh You"...
Yes, this is the time to reinvent however, nothing about this feels like reinvention. This feels exactly like picking up where we left off. "Get Back" to what we did before! While it is not a sustainable choice, I'll take it. As Paul ages into his 80's, the day will come when stadium shows are a distant memory.

Ok, he does "My Valentine" and I am willing to bet that causes mass exodus.

I missed seeing him do selections from Egypt Station when he toured in 2019. I had tickets but was hanging out at the hospital (actually, it was quite serious). Anyway, I didn't feel that deprived as he didn't do the best songs from that album-Dominos, Confidante (only done live at New York Grand Central Station) and Happy With You. Now, the later one probably wouldn't make best use of his voice outside of the studio so substitute I Don't Know.
Anyway, I hope these represents Egypt as well as Lavatory Lil, Find My Way, Slidin, and Seize the Day off of Macca III.
To see a great concert opener, go on YouTube under Long Tailed Winter Bird and someone has put up footage of him and his band taking the stage with that music going and then it fades into him live. That would work great.

Much as I would prefer Paul to stop touring, the fact is that his newer songs are better suited to his current voice and he should do more of them. But he won't. Given his past habits, the "Egypt Station" songs will likely disappear into the same black hole as every other recent album he's no longer promoting. Given his tendency to focus on the more upbeat tunes when he does new stuff, I think "Find My Way" and "Slidin" are pretty certain, and "Seize the Day" has a chance. The latter might actually benefit from a bit of Wix's synth-orchestra wizardry. He should do "Women and Wives," but I don't expect it.

I got a feeling (pun intended) that Paul will be aksed to perform at the Grammy awards ceremony in April,"Find My Way" is nominated for "Best Rock Song". If he does perform, we will get general idea of how good is voice will be for upcoming tour.
