This new "song" is a steaming turd of a tune - absolutely wretched. But....it just entered the Billboard Hot 100 singles at # 15. Gives Paul two top 15 singles in the U.S. at the same time for the first time in who knows when (Four Five Seconds holds at #5 again).

RE: Worst McCartney album?
Nancy R wrote: HaileyMcComet wrote: I've only heard New a few times, so it's my least favorite so far. Maybe in a few years after Improved comes out and it's old it won't be. Hailey, you need to listen to it some more! It is his best album since Flaming Pie! No it's not. It's not even within shouting distance of MAF or Chaos. It's half of a pretty good album and half of a pretty boring one. And yes, that's just my take and your mileage may vary. Totally agreed. With exception of the lead single "New" (a masterpiece which deserved to be a hit single) and perhaps 2 or 3 other songs, the album is very mediocre. A surprising lack of great classic Paul melodies overall...much of the album sounds uninspired and half-baked. No great rocker on it and no great ballads. Early Days has some nice chords and melodic touches, but the super shaky frail vocal ruins it for me - I know Paul is getting older, but can't believe he can't sing it better than that. :

RE: FourFiveSeconds- new collab. with Rihanna, Kanye and Paul
I agree with the below quote. Except for the single "New" - which I believe is a masterpiece and should have been a hit single, and a handful of other songs mentioned below, the album New was subpar Paul - lots of half-baked rather sloppy tunes not sung very well ("Hosanna" anyone?) with a notable absence of great Paul melodies overall. Not even close to Flowers or Tug of War. That said, it is incredible to see Paul's name on a single now at # 15 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles - amazing. That one could hit #1 and I hope it does - long overdue! prudence1964 wrote: 21st Century Paul wrote: favoritething wrote: ... Welcome back, by the way. Smile.. One reason for me to go away from here is the New album. I didn't like, I don't like it and I think I'll never like it but I didn't want to argue here about it over and over. Right now, for me the New album would be muuuuch better with Cut Some Slack, Scared, FourFiveSeconds, Only One, Petrushka, Hope For The Future, If I Take You Home Tonight and Meat Free Monday. With only New, Queenie Eye, Early Days and perhaps some other staying.

RE: Video Game Music: "Destiny"
"Hope For The Future" is 10 times the song as compared to "Only One" - what a shame HFTF is getting no attention or meaningful chart action. Could we perhaps do a quick redo/reissue of "Hope For The Future" that says "featuring Kanye West"???

RE: Only One- new song by Kanye West, featuring Paul
Amazing to actually see the name "Paul McCartney" listed on a single cracking the Billboard Hot 100 Singles chart at # 35. I hope it hits # 1. Kanye piggyback ride or not, a number #1 single out of this would totally count in Paul's hit singles discography on Billboard, Wiki and otherwise. Paul totally deserves it - his singles have been astoundingly ignored by radio and the charts since 1989. At least some of those singles ("New", "The World Tonight", "Hope Of Deliverance", for example) should have been huge hit singles in the U.S. If those songs had been released anytime between around 1966 and the early 80's they all likely would have been number #1 singles - and deservedly so. If "Only One" hits the top of Billboard, wouldn't it be great for Paul to be able to say his most recent #1 single was in 2015?? Now THAT would be something. And I think it might help the next new album lead single from Paul get more attention on the radio perhaps

RE: Set List critique
Actually, the biggest disappointment and surprise for me concerning the Free As A Bird recording is finding out that Jeff Lynne sang on the harmonies. WTF indeed?? The last chance ever to have purely Paul and George harmonizing as The Beatles and Lynne is like "hold on guys, let me jump in here and ruin this moment" ops:

RE: Video Game Music: "Destiny"
So is Hope For The Future getting any airplay or charting at all anywhere? I don't believe it is, unfortunately....and what a shame. Yes, the video is lame....but I believe the song is fine musically....certainly nothing second rate about the melody and arrangement.....a strong Bond film vibe. Such a shame that no matter what Paul puts out now as a single, it just will not get played or go anywhere on the charts. If the single "New" had come out in the early 80s or in 1965 it would have deservedly been a smash #1 single. Who would have thought in 1986 (Spies Like Us # 7, Press # 21) or 1989 (My Brave Face # 25) that would be it in terms of top 40 singles for Paul in the U.S.? I remember being shocked in '89 that My Brave Face didn't do better as a single at that time. What wouldn't we give to see a Paul single reach # 25 on Billboard now??

RE: Set List critique
Well, the most amazing news is Wix's confirmation that the band WITH PAUL have actually run through and rehearsed Silly Love Songs recently - that is incredible!!! To know that he's actually sung it and relearned and played his iconic bass part in a rehearsal setting recently is mind blowing! Surprised the board is not talking more about that. Wonder if anyone in the band will suggest to Paul that he really (really) should dust off the Rickenbacker bass for that one : :

RE: Set List critique
Verrrryyyy interesting reading the track list for the Art Of McCartney album - my understanding is that Paul's band play the backing track for most if not all of those recording. So apparently Paul's band has learned So Bad, Helen Wheels, Wanderlust and last but not least No More Lonely Nights??? They can actually play those in their entirety. If they know those tunes how on Earth does it not cross his mind to pick up the bass during rehearsals run through them and add them to the set list? That would be incredible. Same reason though I guess that he won't touch the Rickenbacker bass with a 10 foot pole - it's like he's forgotten he ever played it
-
RE: Set List critique
Wouldn't it be something if Paul pulled out She's A Woman, Long Tall Sally, Help or Hard Day's Night at Candlestick Park tonight? Prediction - none of those songs will be played...will be same old set list with perhaps the predictable switch out of I Saw Her Standing There for Get Back :-(. Would love to be proven wrong though

RE: Set List critique
With the At The Speed Of Sound remaster hitting in September wonder if by some miracle Paul might shock everyone in the 2nd leg of the tour by getting out the Rickenbacker for just one song - Silly Love Songs. If he did that (even with no other changes in the setlist), it would be truly mindblowing I don't think he realizes how incredible that would be as surprise in the set list. We can only dare to wish and dream on that one!!

RE: Set List critique
The verse melody of Save Us is a throw away, seems it was created merely to justify the chorus. It is rushed, uninteresting and clunky to sing. The verse melody of My Brave Face is smooth with an ascending melody that leaves itself open to harmony and flows nicely into the descending melody of the pre-chorus, then BAM! "Now that I'm alone again!"
Exactly! I've thought the same thing for awhile. Save Us sounds weak, uninspired, and half-baked - shouldn't have made final cut for the album, much less taking up room in the current set list. Mediocre at best. Not anywhere near in the same league as My Brave Face, Figure Of Eight or any number of other tunes that should have made the setlist.

RE: Set List critique
I believe Paul could handle No More Lonely Nights just fine now - problem isn't with his range, he still has tremendous upper register range. The problem is rather with lower key melodies such as Long And Winding Road and Blackbird - age makes it difficult to hold and navigate lower key notes/melodies especially at a slower tempo. I believe the reason he doesn't do No More Lonely Nights is because he knows every concert review that mentions him playing that song will include some sort of reference to the song being from his mega flop film from the 80s. I'm certain that's why he won't play it. I love that movie, but I'm afraid it did damage his solo career in terms of being considered a hot top 40 radio airplay artist - it was right after that movie that the hit singles stopped coming. If Broad Street had never come out, he might well have continued having top 10 radio hits into the 90s. :

audi wrote: My Salamander wrote: ... And such a shame he didn't tour in the early 80s when he was in his early 40s with tremendous vocal power. Can you imagine that? I've said it many, many times -- although almost no one agrees with me: Paul McCartney was at his technical, vocal-peak in the early '80s. I absolutely agree. I've always thought that Paul's middle eight vocal break in Say Say Say ("you never ever worried and you never shed a tear") is one of the finest pop vocal moments ever recorded by anyone. Really highlights the absolute best qualities of Paul's powerful / super clear pop voice in the early 80's. His vocal on My Brave Face as well - I could listen to the first chorus of "now that I'm alone again" endlessly...

RE: Set List critique
So is it true that Paul really did rehearse "No More Lonely Nights" in the past 10 years or so for possible inclusion on the set list? That would be amazing to hear - even a rough bootleg of a rehearsal. I wish Broad Street outtakes were available - they certainly filmed more of the live band warehouse scene than what made it into the movie. For starters, they recorded a new version of Band On The Run with Ringo on drums - it has never come out but man would love to hear that - a 1983 era Paul singing Band On The Run would have been amazing. And such a shame he didn't tour in the early 80s when he was in his early 40s with tremendous vocal power. Can you imagine that?

RE: Set List critique
And I would loooove to hear No Values and/or Not Such A Bad Boy in the setlist (with Rickenbacker of course). THAT would be a knockout. Not gonna happen of course - not even counting that the Ricky has left the building and ain't never coming back
-
RE: Set List critique
I also would take out "Save Us" and put "Jet" back where it belongs as follow-up to the opener. Save Us sounds flat and uninspired (including the album version) - just kind of lays there like a Coke left out on the counter for a week.

RE: Set List critique
It's very frustrating for the hardcore fans who shell out hard-earned $ year after year to get a set list grown stale. Paul talks in Rolling Stone about needing to play the "big hits" as to why set list changes are minimal. Well, "bit hits" certainly include Silly Love Songs, With A Little Luck, No More Lonely Nights, Uncle Albert, I Want To Hold Your Hand, She Loves You, Ticket To Ride, Hard Day's Night and many others that just won't ever get played. And the Rickenbacker bass for whatever reason just will not be touched or considered for playing on stage for whatever reason....
